Research Staff Careers Support

As part of our Careers support, our Research Staff Careers Consultant - Eleanor Hennige - will be holding individual Career Development Consultations, these Consultations are available to book via MyEd. Eleanor will also be delivering a programme of Careers workshops within the IAD Research Staff programme. The next workshop to run will be a CV Briefing Session focussing on Academic CVs. Other career workshops running this semester include:

Learning and Teaching Conference 2021

The annual University of Edinburgh Learning and Teaching Conference brings together staff and students to celebrate and share good practice and innovation in learning and teaching.
This year the conference will be hosted online and take place from the 15-17 of June, with the first day also being open to colleagues outside the University.

The deadline for submitting proposals is Wednesday 20 January 2021.

WriteFest

November is known as Academic Writing Month and during this month the IAD run a local contribution called WriteFest.  The aim of this writing festival is to bring people together to raise awareness and celebrate academic writing.  In 2020, with the adjustment to home working we asked our participants to provide some ‘Top Tips’ for writing from home.  This infographic (link below) provides a summary of WriteFest 2020 and a selection of writing tips.

Joint Projects with National Research Council of Italy (CNR)

The RSE–CNR Joint Project scheme is designed to facilitate international collaboration between researchers based in Scotland and Italy who are working in Physical and Engineering Sciences, Life Sciences and Humanities and Social Sciences. A grant is provided to researchers to cover travel, subsistence and research expenses.

The collaboration should be based on a single project, with two teams or individuals based in Scotland and Italy. The collaboration should involve bilateral exchanges between Scotland and Italy (applications will only be considered for bilateral, not multilateral, projects).

 

Fund deadline

January 20, 2021 5:00 pm
 

Fund value

Applications will be considered for funding of up to £6,000 per project, or £3,000 per year. A similar level of funding will be provided by the CNR to the Italy-based applicant.

2 years

Technician Commitment announces Collaboration Fund

The new Technician Commitment Collaboration Fund launched on the 7th December 2020, funding projects to support the sustainability, recognition, development & visibility of the technical workforce.

The application window runs from 7th December 2020 - 15th February 2021, and successful projects should be delivered between 1st March and 31st December 2021.

Early Career Researcher Forum opens to applications


UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is calling on postdoctoral researchers, research associates and other early career researchers to join its new Early Career Researcher Forum. The forum will give researchers a voice in UKRI’s strategy, policy development and decision making.  UKRI hope to help build a community for early career researchers to benefit from peer interactions, learning, support and other opportunities.  The forum is open to researchers who identify themselves as employed as early career researchers.

Application deadline is 18:00 on 29 January. Applications may be submitted after this date, but those wishing to attend induction events at the end of February should submit their application by this deadline.

Brexit and EU Research Funding - January 2021 Update

Now that the EU and the UK have reached an agreement on their future relationship, Áine Ryan, International Research Funding Manager has written about what this means for UK-based researchers' access to EU funding.

Up to £100 public engagement funding for Wellcome researchers and collaborators

The ScotPEN Wellcome Engagement Award (SWEA) offers funding of up to £100k to help Wellcome grantholders across Scotland engage the public with their research.

The next funding call closes on Monday 1st February 2021.
Inter-institutional collaborations are encouraged and early career researchers can be included as co-applicants so please do enquire if you’re interested in opportunities to get involved.

EPSRC have announced two new funding calls for University of Edinburgh academics, researchers and post-docs looking to accelerate the impact of their research. Funds are available for postdoctoral researchers to be (virtually) seconded to work with industry, while University academics and researchers at all career stages can use the funds for secondments, collaborations and commercialisation projects.

The deadline for all applications is the 25th January 2021.

Connecting your ideas to the world
Apply now to the Post-Covid AI Accelerator in Edinburgh


Are you a data-driven AI scaleup looking to make an impact post-Covid? AI-focused entrepreneurs across the UK and beyond can now apply to DDI’s 6-month Post-Covid AI Accelerator. Based at the University of Edinburgh’s world-leading innovation hub - the Bayes Centre, the Accelerator runs from February to July 2021.
 
Financed by the Scottish Funding Council through DDI, successful companies will be awarded a £7.5k grant and given desk space at the state-of-the-art Bayes Centre in the centre of Edinburgh. The Centre is working continuously to provide a Covid-safe, inspiring and productive working environment to all AI Accelerator participants.
 
The Accelerator will give you access to the University’s top academic expertise, alongside DDI’s (Data Driven Innovation) commercial focus, to connect your idea to wider society through entrepreneurship, as it recovers from Covid-19.
 
Also included are links to investors, mentors and business coaches, including London-based networks - all in the lead up to Engage Invest Exploit 2021 - Scotland’s premier investment event where you can showcase your ideas. Through programme partner Scale Space, participants also access a collaborative community of like-minded people. The programme will also be supported by Nile.
 
Last year’s AI Accelerator participants experienced over £3.8M investment and generated over £3.1M of revenue during the programme.
