Editorial

We wake up to a new morning and a brand new year,
leaving the reflections of the past behind us.
2020 was extraordinary year for us all worldwide. Who could have thought this time last year that we would be in a lockdown now - especially during this Christmas period - wearing face masks in shops with social distancing, not allowed to cuddle each other and entertaining a limited number of visitors at home? It seems like something from a futuristic film - but unfortunately it is the harsh reality which we now have to live with.

However, there is also light glowing on the future horizon - both literally and figuratively. In Europe the shortest day lies behind us and we can look forward to lengthening days again with more daylight. In addition, we also will soon have a vaccine that contains the virus, and let's hope that we can gradually return to our normal lives in the course of next year. Although, normal? If I speak for myself: I have become even more aware of the vulnerability of our existence, and that we must be careful with ourselves, our loved ones and our environment.

Hope helps us to persevere and stay strong – and from now on things can only get better!
With that in mind, we are looking forward to the future, in which we will make an important step forward in time and space, with our first online MSP International Conference due in April. Very exciting, and we hope you all will join us!
On behalf of the Board I wish you all a very happy, healthy and spacious 2021.

Impressions MSP training in November, the Netherlands

Due to Covid restrictions many international MSP workshops were cancelled, which of course was very disappointing. However, we still managed to organize a “live” 3 day workshop in November in the Netherlands, of course with the necessary Covid restrictions of social distancing and face masks. It also happened to be Lucas’ 70th birthday during that workshop, which we celebrated by giving Lucas “secret compliments” and small presents whilst he was sitting in the middle of the space with his eyes closed. In that way he could take it all in!
Jacqueline van Heemskerk explained the methodology MSP and Eating disorders and Christine Beenhakker gave a demonstration on MSP and Depression. Tatsiana van Neerbos was one of the participants, and she shares her experience with you in this newsletter. We herewith like to share a few memorable moments of this workshop with you in photo’s.

Experiences from a MSP trainee

How to solve problems without talking about the content with your client
by Tatsiana van Neerbos

Last November I followed the three-day training Mental Space Psychology. Trainer Lucas Derks let us  experience various Mental Space exercises: from solving mild psychological problems to trauma and depression. The similarity between all these exercises is that the content is not discussed. Lucas mostly has no idea what the real problem is, and he does not even want to know! He guides his clients with spatial exercises, let them walk to different places, instructs them to make crazy movements and let them visualize resources to solve the problem. Not a single exercise makes clear what the problem is. After the exercise, a satisfied smile appears on the clients face: the problem has been solved and the client has discovered how to deal with the problem.

As a participant of these three-day training I am truly amazed. Although the exercises seem very simple, the client works hard on a solution in his/her inner experience. I am sitting on the edge of my seat to follow all the demos, so I can practise the exercises with my practice buddy. The results are amazing - so simple and so effective!

The Clean Space exercise has impressed me the most. Hardly any words are spoken during this exercise. The client chooses a place in the room who knows more about the problem than he or she already knows. The client literally stands in that place and experiences associations and information from that particular spot, and stands there until that place no longer provides any new information. Then the client chooses a new spot to go to and allows all associations and information to emerge again. The client does not mention or share which insights are gained. After going through about eight different places in the room, the client has ultimately found the solution to his or her problem. Finally, you check if the client is satisfied with the solution found. Shining eyes and a smile from ear to ear says: yess!

This Clean Space exercise may seem a bit unusual or magical for clients to experience. However, experienced trainers, coaches and therapists know that several techniques are enclosed in this exercise: associating and dissociating from other places, working with perception positions, communicating with parts, exploiting the client’s  potential and finding inner resources. This exercise takes little effort to guide and makes a significant positive impact. I am very pleased to be able to put these new techniques into practice with my clients.
