Congress Evacuated in Response to Capitol Breaching Congress reconvenes during the first week of January for votes, notably the electoral college votes prior to a period of district work the following week. Floor calendars can be found here. The Senate and House gathered on Wednesday, January 6th to certify Electoral College Votes for the Presidency. Unexpectedly, Capitol Hill was met with protests delaying the process.

HR 1 For the People Act HR 1 was reintroduced in Congress earlier this week. The bill includes significant provisions regarding campaign finance law. Read more about the case for HR 1 by the Brennan Center.
 
Senate Hearings meet on intelligence and armed forces Senate Select Committee on Intelligence met on Wednesday January 6, 2021 10:00 AM (EST) for a closed briefing on intelligence matters. Senate Committee on Armed Services plans to meet on January 12th 9:30am (EST) to examine civilian control of armed forces.

Bills on the House Floor  Multiple House bills were reviewed for technical corrections this week including the FedRamp Authorization Act, the Congressional Budget Justification Transparency Act of 2021, the Inspector General Protection Act Construction Consensus Procurement Improvement Act of 2021, and the Settlement Agreement Information Database Act of 2021.
 
House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) Urges Members to Honor Oaths to Defend and Preserve the Constitution and Our Democracy In a Press Release, Hoyer delivered remarks on the House Floor regarding Arizona’s electoral votes, which were rejected. He states  ‘It would be unfair and wrong to disenfranchise American voters and overrule the courts and states on this extraordinarily thin basis. And I will not pretend such a vote would be a harmless protest gesture… while relying on others to do the right thing. I will vote to respect the people's decision and defend our system of government as we know it." “I urge my colleagues to vote no on this objection, as McConnell said, a danger to our democracy.”
 
House Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) Remarks on the Electoral College Count In a Press Release, Mitch McConnell states, “We are debating a step that has never been taken in American history: Whether Congress should overrule voters and overturn a presidential election. “The voters, the courts, and the states have all spoken. “If we overrule them all, it would damage our republic forever. “I have served 36 years in the Senate. This will be the most important vote I have ever cast.”
