Bishop Emma's New Year Message

The Bishop of Penrith encourages people to find joy in God, be patient in affliction and be faithful in prayer in a New Year’s message filmed as we entered a third national lockdown.

The Rt Rev Dr Emma Ineson delivers her message from Kendal Castle and reflects on the need for people to pray for those who have COVID, our health professionals, teachers, communities, businesses and leaders.

Bishop Emma draws on a passage from Romans 12:12 as the basis for her message: “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” Read more here.

       Further Lockdown Guidance

The Bishop of Carlisle has written a further briefing to clergy, detailing new national church guidance after England entered a new lockdown from the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Bishop James' latest letter highlights that content on the C of E's coronavirus page has now been streamlined and he draws particular attention to the following:

Updated documents:

Updated/New FAQ:
  • What is permitted during lockdown?
  • What do we need to do if we have decided to suspend public worship?
  • Can churches be used as vaccination centres?
  • Can funerals go ahead?
  • Can weddings go ahead?

Meanwhile Bishop James has reiterated that rigorous risk assessments are needed for those churches which choose to remain open at this time. A COVID-19 Parish Risk Assessment Template can be downloaded here.

The church, centrally, is working closely with Government departments on issues of playing music and singing in churches and as soon as guidance is updated we shall bring that to you.

Heritage Culture Recovery Fund

Special guidance has been produced to support churches and cathedrals who want to apply for funding through the second round of the Cultural Recovery Fund (CRF).

The Government's CRF2 is focussed on re-opening and welcoming people back – whether visitors, communities or commercial partners - offering grants of between £10,000 and £3 million. The application window is 7-26 January.

The Cathedral and Church Buildings Team guidance draws out the potential for funding proposals for churches and highlights areas that are most likely to lead to successful grant applications. All listed places of worship are eligible to apply.

The emphasis is on enabling people with listed buildings to be ready to share them with the community when we are able to. The church does not have to be one that is specifically considered a tourist or visitor destination. You can read the full advice and application form here

Applications for CRF2  must be made via the online form on the Heritage Fund website. Any grants awarded will have to be spent between April 2021 and the end of June 2021. Previous applicants to the CRF for Heritage – both successful and unsuccessful - can apply.

          Living In Love And Faith

The Rev Canon Cameron Butland, the Diocese's Living In Love And Faith Facilitation Team Leader, provides this update as our churches are encouraged to engage with LLF in 2021.

Last November the Church of England produced a resource book and material, 'Living in Love and Faith', with the declared encouragement to all parishes, deaneries and dioceses to look at the material during 2021.

The material looks at Christian teaching and learning about identity, sexuality, relationships and marriage. This is a vast subject, and the 500-page book gives a lot of information to reflect upon and to consider.

To assist consideration of Living in Love and Faith, Bishop James has appointed a facilitation team which I am in the process of putting together.

The team will offer two people to facilitate discussions in a safe space where all views will be respected and valued.

It is important to recognise from the start of this process that there is no proposal or resolution to be debated, this is an open discussion of material which has been provided by the national church.

No-one in 2021 will be required to report back or to debate any issues. This is a way of encouraging engagement with these highly significant but sensitive issues.

After an introduction at the March Diocesan Synod, parishes, mission communities and deaneries will be able to book team facilitation through me but in the meantime a copy of the book is being sent to all stipendiary and SSM clergy.

Cumbria Theology Society

The Cumbria Theology Society began in 1994, providing an annual series of four to six well-attended lectures by prominent theologians.

In 2019 it evolved into Engaging Theology in Cumbria, which offers to anyone interested exciting ways to reflect theologically in different formats on a range of topics.

ETC is delighted to launch a series of seminars for 2021 on Zoom, to which all are welcome! In this series, eight theologians explore hope and fear in mission, theological education, the arts, the climate crisis, education, and more, in a Zoom-based series of talks and group discussions that are inclusive, accessible, mission-focused, and, above all, hopeful.

  • The first takes place at 7.30pm on 8 February, as  Dr Michael Leyden, Dean of Emmanuel Theological College considers Theology, Formation, and Living Hopefully.

To book please visit the ETC website's 'Contact Us' Page and complete the form.
