Reducing Carbon Emissions whilst Working from Home

It is Big Energy Saving Week and with the majority of us continuing to work from home for the next few months, the CCCA has compiled some top tips for you to share with your employees and colleagues to help  save money on energy bills and reduce carbon emissions.

Whether you’re a homeowner, private or social tenant, there are many ways you can reduce how much energy you use and how much money you spend. Here are some highlights of the tips

  1. Be careful with the kettle- Only boil the amount of water you need each time rather than filling it at the start of the day.
  2. Turn down your thermostat- Reduce the heat on your thermostat by 1°C to decrease your heating bills by up to 10%.
  3. Take control of your heating- Use the timer to set your heating and hot water to come on when they are needed.
  4. Procure energy efficient equipment- Be sure to check the energy rating on equipment which you buy to work from home to reduce energy consumption.
  5. Ensure your workspace has plenty of natural light when possible- Choosing a workspace with access to as much natural light as possible will mean that you do not need to have the lights on all day and will therefore save energy.
Visit the Energy Saving Trust website for more detailed energy saving tips for varying budgets. The Centre for Sustainable Energy website also provides excellent advice on keeping yourself well and warm through the winter.

Surplus Food Turned into Meals- Volunteers, Funding and Space Required

FEAST With Us is a food poverty alleviation charity, working across Camden, Islington and Haringey in north London. Since 2015, FEAST With Us have been intercepting surplus food and collecting donations, and using it to cook delicious and nutritious meals for vulnerable people experiencing food poverty and insecurity.

FEAST With Us is operating during the new lockdown as an essential service and part of the emergency response

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the demand for the service provided by FEAST With Us has grown rapidly and they are now cooking out of six venues 16 times a week. This service could not be done without the help of a host of volunteers who generously give their time to collect food, cook meals and deliver them to the meal recipients.

Feast with Us are immediately looking for help during lockdown:

  • Volunteer cooks
  • Volunteers to collect food donations
  • Volunteers to deliver food

GLA- SuDS Sector Guidance

Sector-specific sustainable drainage (SuDS) guidance has been developed by the GLA as part of the London Sustainable Drainage Action Plan.

These documents are designed for facility managers or those responsible for the quality and upkeep of premises and explain SuDS, their contribution to climate change adaptation and other benefits.

A sustainable drainage system is designed to:

  • reduce surface water run-off rates and volumes
  • improve water quality
  • increase biodiversity where they can be provided at surface level
Camden Council adopted revised local area requirements in July 2018. Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) are needed for all major planning applications, unless shown not be appropriate. This requirement is set out under the Ministerial Statement by the Secretary of State on 18 December 2014.

  • Are sustainability leaders who can champion the Camden Climate Pledge
  • Have ambitions to lead on sustainability and would benefit from free support
Being one of the first signatories to the Camden Climate Pledge will provide an opportunity for your organisation to lead on sustainability and be part of the borough wide campaign later in the year.
