Welcome to this our January newsletter.

With all of the UK in yet another lockdown, our thoughts and concerns are with you all during this extremely difficult position you find yourselves in yet again. We will do all we can to keep you up to date with developments as they happen, continue to lobby Government on the plight of our industry and if we can help you in anyway, please do contact us.

One off top up grants for businesses forced to close in the retail (our industry is classed as retail), hospitality and leisure sectors:

Following the Prime Minister’s announcement yesterday of a third lockdown for England, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak has announced one-off top up grants for retail, hospitality and leisure businesses worth up to £9,000 per property.

The funding is to be provided on a per-property basis to support businesses, and is expected to benefit over 600,000 business properties, worth £4 billion in total across the UK.

In addition, a £594 million discretionary fund is also being made available for Local Authorities and the Devolved Administrations to support other businesses not eligible for the grants that might be affected by the restrictions.

The one-off top-ups will be granted to closed businesses as follows:
  • £4,000 for businesses with a rateable value of £15,000 or under
  • £6,000 for businesses with a rateable value between £15,000 and £51,000
  • £9,000 for businesses with a rateable value of over £51,000
As business support is devolved, the devolved administrations will receive additional funding as a result of these announcements:
- The Scottish Government will receive £375 million
- The Welsh Government will receive £227 million
- The Northern Ireland Executive will receive £127 million

Please note, the hair, barber and beauty sector is eligible for these grants in England. However, as business support is a devolved matter, the devolved nations have received additional funding as a result of this, which will go towards their Covid-19 response.

All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Hairdressing, Barbering and Cosmetology:

The next APPG virtual meeting will be held on Wednesday 10th February commencing at 3pm.
The agenda for this meeting will be;
  • The effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on our industry
  • What Government could have done and must be doing moving forward to support the industry
  • Increasing critical reasons for mandatory registration/regulation
Our meetings are Co-Chaired by John McNally MP and Christina Rees MP, and many other MPs are also invited to join us, in particular those that have a particular interest and could have a huge influence on our agenda.

Even virtually there are limited numbers that can join the meeting as we are time limited, but with this first meeting of 2021 we would like to invite nine of our members to join us on a first-come, first-serve basis, and where you feel you could have a valuable input to the meeting and the agenda.

If you are interested in joining this meeting, please contact me direct on; keithconniford@haircouncil.org.uk

This is a really great opportunity to become more involved in the work we do, and to see how these meetings, albeit virtually pan out.
If you apply and are not successful, don’t worry, there will be others during the year that you could be part of.

NB/ Please do not apply if you have attended an APPG meeting in the pastWe will contact you if your application to attend is successful, if you do not hear from us please assume that you were not in the first nine we heard from.
Renewing your membership:

With the work we do on behalf of you and the industry, renewing your membership is more critical now than it has ever been before! As a not-for-profit organisation, all income is put toward running the organisation, working with Government to continue our campaign to finally get our industry regulated, keeping members up to date with anything and everything impacting their lives industry wise, whilst in addition providing a ‘place’ for all our members to get support and guidance.

We are the go to voice to/for Government and our APPG (All Party Parliamentary Group) is the only parliamentary representation group fighting for the hairdressing and barbering industry!

So, please do renew your membership
