A News Source for Friends of Duke Urology  • Winter 2021

Message from the Chief
Welcome to our Duke Urology's Winter 2021 Newsletter.

Like everyone else across the globe, Duke Urology has been impacted by the COVID-19 Pandemic. Yet, this challenge has brought out the caring, dedication, and innovation of our faculty, fellows, residents, APP's along with clinical and administrative staff. With a major shift embracing telemedicine and cyber meetings to facilitate our clinical practice, research and education, the current newsletter documents how we have gone virtual to support all of our missions.

We have shifted our Duke Tuesday programs to a virtual format and would like to again thank Chris Winters for being our first Virtual Visiting Professor. In addition, while we were planning to hold our 52nd annual Duke Urologic Assembly meeting at the Grand Floridian Hotel at Disney World, we have shifted to make this a completely virtual program. Thanks to Michael Ferrandino and John Wiener along with the rest of our Duke Urology CME committee for preparing an innovative and stimulating program that should be of interest to all practicing urologists. I would encourage you to click on the link for this conference to obtain additional information.

We also highlight our CURED (Committee for Urologic Research, Education, and Development) supporters who have generously donated their time and funds to enhance our world class research and educational missions. This fall, we held our first virtual CURED meeting and although successful, we certainly hope that we can get together in person in the fall of 2021 so we can personally speak to you about the great things that are happening at Duke Urology.

Wishing everyone a happy, healthy and safe New Year,

Glenn

Virtual Resident Interviews

COVID had a major impact on the resident application and interview process in 2020. Nationwide, medical students were not allowed to perform subinternships at other medical schools, so we had no visiting medical students this fall. The resident applicant interviews were all conducted over Zoom with no visitors to Durham sadly. We interviewed 40 outstanding applicants including a trio from Duke for our three civilian residency positions. Although applicants, residents, faculty, and staff were understandably nervous about the process, it all went remarkably smoothly due to the tremendous preparation by the Department of Surgery team, residency coordinator Sherry Davi, and program director Michael Ferrandino. Match results will be announced in late January.

Seven great applicants applied for the fourth residency position for U.S. Army trainees. The match result was announced on January 6, and we are excited to welcome 2nd Lt. Jeremy Kurnot from Eastern Virginia Medical School

CHRIS WINTERS MD - NOVEMBER VISITING PROFESSOR
J.Chris Winters, MD, Professor and Chairman of Urology at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans and Vice Chancellor of Clinical Affairs at LSU Health New Orleans and CEO of the LSU Healthcare Network, gave the 2020 John E. Dees Lectureship titled, "Neurobiology of Pelvic Pain: Implications for Treatment." Unfortunately, Dr. Winters could not join us in person, but his virtual visit was a great success. Instead of dinner with the faculty on the night prior, we had a nice visit during virtual "cocktail hour." The Dees Lecture was extremely well-received by 180 attendees within Duke Urology and the Department of OB-GYN. As part of our new visiting professor format, he met with multiple faculty members one-on-one afterwards followed by a basic science talk to residents and fellows on "The Active Urothelium" His visit concluded with a case conference with our residents.
ANNUAL CURED BRUNCH OCCURS ONLINE ON HALLOWEEN
Seven Duke Urology faculty members (pictured above L-R: Glenn Preminger, Duke Development liaison March Romary, Cary Robertson, Brant Inman, Jonathan Routh, Monty Hughes, Drew Peterson, and Jeff Gingrich) gave presentation to our Committee of Urologic Research, Education, and Development (CURED) Fund supporters. Despite having to move the meeting to Zoom, 39 individuals took time on a Saturday morning to join us and learn about the research, clinical, and outreach passions of the Duke Urology faculty. We greatly appreciate the interest and support of our worldwide Duke Urology community.
DUKE UROLOGIC ASSEMBLY 2021 TO GO VIRTUAL
