I wish that our leaders—at every level of government—were doing everything in their power to get this terrible virus under control so that we may begin to safely reopen our schools at the District level. Federal financial relief is thankfully on the horizon, and the Governor just shared his initial budget proposal, which includes funding to incentivize the reopening of schools. But Districts like LAUSD, which serve the highest need students who live in communities hit hardest by this COVID crisis, need more than just incentives to return to campuses. We need a standard, structured, fair system that puts students first in reopening plans. As we continue to mold District reopening plans, we are also advocating and working with our partners at the city, county, state, and federal levels to ensure students are prioritized in the long road ahead to recovery.
School Spotlight: Our Grab & Go efforts didn't break for the holidays
As our school communities took some much-needed time away over the winter break, our dedicated efforts to continue meeting the needs of our families didn't skip a beat. Our Grab and Go meal sites have served nearly 100 million meals since the beginning of this crisis, and have distributed millions more in essential items and supplies. I am grateful for the opportunity to lend a hand in these efforts—including delivering gifts to families at Bernstein High before the holidays and passing out meals at Sutter Middle this week! Thank you to everyone working tirelessly to make this operation possible every day!
This year has been tough, especially for our students. That's why we brought in renowned pediatrician, expert, and award-winning author Dr. Cara Natterson and LAUSD School Mental Health Coordinator Elena Jimenez to focus our last virtual town hall of 2020 on supporting the social-emotional wellbeing of your children during this crisis. You can check out this and all our past town halls on Facebook or our website.
