Grow herbs at home with Jekka

We are often asked what herbs can be grown indoors as houseplants and although the majority of herbs prefer being outside there are a few, usually the more tropical varieties, that can tolerate and will be quite happy inside.

The joy of keeping herbs as houseplants is that you get the usual structural and aesthetic element that goes along with your typical houseplant as well as the culinary and medicinal benefits found with herbs.

Jekka's herbs below are usually kept in the glasshouse and moved to the tunnel during the warmer months. As with all houseplants, the three main things to consider are:

  1. Light - Your indoor herb garden will need at least six hours of sunlight per day to thrive.
  2. Water - A very important element for physiological purposes in a plant's life, including growth and metabolism. Jekka's tip is to water in the morning.
  3. Air - Good air flow around a young plant is essential to help prevent disease.

Happy Herby Valentine

Herbs are the foundation of food, health, happiness and well-being as well as being steeped in myth, magic and folklore; so what is a better treat to give this Valentines than a herb?

The pretty viola in the bottom left of this photograph is Heartsease (Viola tricolor) which, in the middle ages, was prescribed as a remedy for broken hearts. In the traditional language of flowers, the purple and yellow stand for memories and the white loving thoughts.  For further information on the myth, magic and folklore of herbs please read Jekka's blog.
