Students will need writing paper or a journal, colorful writing tools, a ruler, and an eraser.

Please join us for Maxwell's book club for adults of all ages, hosted by your library staff! Together, we will choose a book, an author, or a theme and get together on Zoom to share our thoughts, impressions, and suggestions for future selections.
At our February 24 meeting, Maxwell Reads joins with Alan NaPier of CNY Reads to discuss Elizabeth Letts's Finding Dorothy, a novel of historical fiction based on the life of Maud Gage. The Zoom discussion is open to anyone who has read the book or is interested in its themes. Register here for February 24 at 7 PM.

The Central New York Reads One Book (CNY Reads) program, launched in 2001, is a reading initiative designed to build community through reading. Each year, a single book is designated the CNY Reads title, and the public is encouraged to read it and participate in programs related to the book and its themes.

For more information on CNY Reads, Elizabeth Letts, and Finding Dorothy, go to https://www.cnyreads.org/book-tie-ins

Borrow the book through OCPL or OverDrive in print, large print, audio, ebook, or eaudio, and read it by our meeting. We will try to reserve a few print copies at Maxwell, but system demand is high. Call to see if one is available for you to check out on your library account. OCPL has provided simultaneous use copies on OverDrive, so we recommend you read this digitally. Patrons will have access to the ebook any time between January 1 and March 31.
Free. Registration is required. Click here to register directly through Zoom so you can receive your meeting invitation.
Bonus book event! Just in time for International Women's Day in March, award-winning historian, author, and speaker Kimberly Hamlin, PhD will hold a discussion of her brilliant biography of Helen Hamilton Gardener, Free Thinker. The event will be via Zoom on Wednesday, March 3 at 7 PM. All but forgotten today, in her time Gardener was a world-renowned author, lecturer, and suffragist. Read about Kimberly Hamlin and Helen Hamilton Gardener on the author's website. The book is available through OCPL and OverDrive, but reading it is not required for the event. Register now through Zoom to receive the meeting link.
For March 24, the Maxwell Reads group will read Beatriz Williams's The Secret Life of Violet Grant. A First World War-era woman physicist and a JFK-era Manhattan socialite are connected in an unexpected and mysterious way in volume one of The Schuyler Sisters Trilogy.

Read about this month's selection at https://www.litlovers.com/reading-guides/fiction/9837-secret-life-of-violet-grant-williams

Borrow the book through OCPL or OverDrive as well as Hoopla in print, large print, audio, ebook, or eaudio, and read it by our meeting. We will reserve a few print copies at Maxwell. Call to see if one is available for you to check out on your library account.

To promote reading to newborns, infants, and toddlers as well as to encourage parent and child bonding through reading, the 1000 Books Foundation has issued a challenge to parents to read 1000 books to their children before kindergarten. Stop in at Maxwell Library to get your first reading log and informational materials, and start reading! Kids can track their progress by looking for their personalized owl stickers on the wall near the picture books.
Keep reading! Digital books count, so help your children become star readers.
Out of reading logs? You can find them here and print them at home.
Ask about our newest cake pans! You can bake a giant donut in your choice of cake flavors and frostings...

DID YOU KNOW...
  • Maxwell patrons have access to The Syracuse Post-Standard, including its blog and Syracuse.com site. The content is provided by our system-wide database, Newsbank. Use this link with your library card number and PIN to gain access to online services!
  • OCPL has added a database of resources for test preparation, college and career planning, and related needs. It is the Gale Testing & Education Reference Center (TERC), and it replaces Learning Express. You can get to it through the Tech tab on Maxwell’s website or by going through OCPL’s Database page (scroll down to “T” for testing).
  • Library patrons may borrow one of three OCPL Tech Packs from Maxwell. Each kit (shown below) contains an HP Chromebook and charger, a Verizon hotspot and charger, and a quick start guide for using the equipment. For more information on lending procedures and equipment specifications, see our website or ask at the circulation desk.
Grab-‘n’-Go Printing

During the COVID pandemic, some Maxwell patrons who don’t own a printer may be reluctant to use our public computers when they need to print documents. In order to keep our printer accessible to the largest number of our patrons, we are offering a printing pick-up service.

You can submit documents by attaching them to an email addressed to printing@maxwellmemoriallibrary.org

Then call us at 315-672-3661 during the library's regular hours to schedule a time to pick your job up.

Costs

Costs are the same as for printing when you’re at the library:

  • 25¢ per side B&W
  • 50¢ per side color

You can have the charges put onto your library account, or you can pay cash (exact change, or very close to it, please) when you come to pick the print job up. Note that library policy requires us to suspend most privileges when your balance is $5.00 or more, so the largest print job we can charge to your library card is 20 sides B&W or 10 sides color.

The fine print

  • Because your submission comes to us by email, do not submit documents containing any information you want to keep secure (for instance, Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, and so on).
  • Best results will be achieved with files in Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx) or PDF formats. We can print files in many other formats, but the results may look different from what you’re hoping for.
  • We won’t print anything until you contact us. Submissions over a week old are subject to deletion.
  • Library account balances of $3.00 or more can be paid with a credit or debit card online through your library account (https://catalog.onlib.org/polaris/logon.aspx). Borrowing privileges are suspended when the balance on your card gets to $5.00 or more.
Digital Yearbook Collection
This is a perfect time to browse the rest of the New York Heritage Digital Collection! Follow the links and have fun. Click here for a list of random collections within the site.

Patrons familiar with Maxwell’s Local History collection know that the library has amassed a good number of West Genesee school yearbooks for in-house reference. Thanks to a CLRC Access and Digitization Grant, and with the permission of the West Genesee Central School District, those yearbooks have been digitized and uploaded to New York Heritage Digital Collections, a project of the Empire State Library Network.

This collection includes yearbooks from West Genesee High School in Camillus from 1958 to 2016, with some missing volumes. Also included are Camillus High School yearbooks from 1958 and 1959, West Genesee Junior High yearbooks from 1971 to 1987, and a West Genesee Central High School Graduation Program from 1958. We will continue to add yearbooks from 2017 on as current students graduate.

Search all the fascinating archives at the New York Heritage site or go directly to Maxwell’s page and to the yearbook collection page.

We purchase each new high school yearbook (The Genesean) as it is published, but haven't been able to obtain a few earlier volumes: 1961, 1990, and 2003. If you have a copy from one of the missing years and no longer need it, we would greatly appreciate your donation so the collection can be complete. Thank you, and happy reminiscing! NOTE:  Recently donated volumes (1989, 1991, 1992) will be added to the digital collection as soon as possible. Thank you for your generosity.
This has been a challenging year for everyone, so we are humbled and touched by the overwhelming support you have given us during this year's annual appeal. Even with so much uncertainty in your lives, you have generously responded to our main fundraising event, and we can't thank you enough. We promise to use your donations to give you even more materials and programs that will enrich your lives in what we hope will be a happier and healthier 2021 for all of us.
