We are deeply saddened to announce that Don Lindale, one of the Waikato’s premier businessmen and former president of the Waikato Chamber of Commerce, passed away recently at age 83.

Don was an influential figure in our community, serving as President from 1985 - 1990. During his tenure Don inaugurated the Chamber’s business awards, the Business After Five programme and raised the public profile of the Chamber by releasing press statements on all business matters that could affect our region. Don was also President when the Chamber changed its name from the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce to the Waikato Chamber of Commerce. This was in recognition of the number of members who came from towns beyond Hamilton city and also to align with the regional perspective the Hamilton Chamber had always espoused.

Securing sponsorships of various kinds was also a key focus of Don’s during his time as President. This significantly bolstered the limited financial resources of the Chamber allowing us  to increase the value offered to our members and the quality of services we provide.

Don’s focus on social events was hugely influential in developing the culture of business that exists in the Waikato today. Providing members with opportunities to socialise and network led to strong relationships and partnerships being built amongst our members, contributing to the friendly, inclusive business community the Waikato is privileged to enjoy.

After stepping down from the Chamber in 1990, Don opened Lindale Fujifilm on Victoria st where he provided photo processing services to Hamilton businesses for many years. Don continued to be an active member of the Chamber, lending his experience and knowledge whenever needed. In 2018 Don was awarded a life membership to the Chamber in recognition of his tireless years of service.

“I am honoured to not only have known Don through the Chamber but also to have been a part of his family as his daughter-in-law” said our Chair, Senga Allen. “He was incredibly impactful in our community and his dedication and passion for local business helped shape our city into the wonderful place it is today. He will be missed dearly.”

We thank Don for his vision, his drive, and the sacrifices he made to build the Chamber into the champion of business that it is today. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him and our thoughts are with his four sons, daughter, and many grandchildren.

Rest in Peace Don.
