Low Profile - The Blackbirds FC Newsletter

Right, where were we?

After a quiet 2020 Blackbirds FC are back in full effect and things are moving with alarming speed.

First gig in a year

We have a show on Thursday 18th February at the Memo Musical Hall, our first in 13 months. This gig was originally booked for May 2020, then postponed to October, and then again to February this year, so finally being able to play is a bit of a thrill.

We are also excited to announce that the legendary Fish John West Reject will join us as our special guests. We hope to be launching a new single as well, so stay tuned for more details on that.

Please note it's a 10pm finish because we know its a school night.

It’s going to be a special night for us after so long up on blocks and we hope you can be there. Tickets are limited to allow for social distancing so don't delay...

Recording begins on new album

Blackbirds hit the ground running this year and have started recording a new album with our old friend Cam McKenzie producing again.

With not much else to do, Jeremy wrote 30 songs last year and has been raring to get them recorded.

So far, we have started work on five new songs and plan to release a string of digital singles during the next couple of months followed by an album release mid-year.

Without wanting to tempt fate, the plan is to have the first single out in time for the gig at the Memo on 18 Feb

The recording set up, easy access to coffee making facilities is a highlight of Cam's studio.
Gina and Cam, throwing the kitchen sink at it.
The new Taylor guitar and a couple of well loved amp heads.

The Fish John West Reject play a rare gig with Blackbirds

Our special guests at the Ember Lounge, The Fish John West Reject, have a long history with Blackbirds dating back to Jeremy's old band Helvelln in the late 80's/90's.

At the time, the Fish were riding high on the success of their first single Left and a reputation for incendiary live shows but were kind enough to take us under their wing and give us support shows.

Mark Narkowicz saw Helvelln play at the City of Malvern's Battle of the Bands and introduced himself afterward. It was exciting to have a band we admired pay us some attention and it gave us a lot of confidence. It's pretty amazing to still be playing gigs together three decades later.

The Fish made a huge name for themselves back in the late 1980s and early 90s as part of the burgeoning Australian indie scene, releasing two acclaimed albums and touring the country.

They reconvened as The Dunaways throughout the 2000s, releasing two albums for the Croxton Records label including the ARIA-nominated recording, Wanderin' Mind.

In 2013 they resumed as The Fish John West Reject after remixing and reissuing their fan-favourite debut album, SWIM.

Since then, they’ve played a sold-out reunion show in their home state of Tasmania and are in the process of recording new material… soon to be released on their own ‘Southwesterly Records’ label. After the tragic death of guitarist Martin Witheford in 2020, The Fish continue as a 3-piece.

The Fish take great delight in playing their first show in two years with Blackbirds FC. Guitarist Harvey Saward (Tender Engines /The Odolites) will be joining the Fish as a special guest as well.

The Fish John West Reject are:

Mark Narkowicz – vocals & guitar

Andrew Viney – vocals & bass guitar

Graham Rankin - drums

FIddle player skips town

In other disappointing 2020 news, we are sorry to say that our violinist John (seen third from left here) has moved to the country with his family and left the band due to the tyranny of distance. We hope he'll move back to the city soon as his good humour, enthusiasm, and lovely playing are sorely missed.

Bye for now

So, exciting and busy times are ahead for Blackbirds FC after a year of silence.

We will be in touch a bit more frequently during the next few months as our plans develop and we thank you for your continued interest and support for the band, Let Your Freak Flag Fly, BBFC xx
