The Harvard Case Study Project

In spring 2021, the Case Method Institute will again invite high-school history, government, and civics teachers to attend its free online professional development workshop. After completing this workshop, teachers will be equipped to lead case-method style discussions in their classrooms and community forums. This unique and exciting program includes:

  • An afternoon of live, online training with Harvard Business School Professor David Moss on Saturday, April 3, including an interactive case discussion. Professor Moss will discuss his “History of American Democracy” course and illustrate the case method teaching approach—the core pedagogy used at Harvard Business School for decades.
  • A full curriculum of Harvard cases free of cost from “History of American Democracy.”
  • An 8-hour asynchronous training program, completed before the Zoom-based session with Professor Moss, where participants will become familiar with case method teaching.
  • certificate from the Institute detailing 32 hours of professional development, delivered upon successful completion of the course and related training and implementation.

The training is the entry-point to a sustained partnership with the Case Method Institute for Education and Democracy, which aims to help teachers more effectively deliver on the democratic promise of a high-school education by bringing the case method to high-schools and communities nationwide. By completing the training, teachers gain access to the full curriculum of cases (which can be taught individually or as a stand-alone course) as well as ongoing support from the program staff to help with implementation. The Case Method Institute provides everything entirely free of charge.

“I’ve never had this experience as a teacher before, and it's explicitly due to the case method—it's a game changer.”
—Eleanor Cannon, History Teacher, Houston, TX

Post-Workshop Requirements
After completing the workshop, nominated teachers are expected to pilot at least one case in their classes during this school year and to help moderate at least one community case discussion that will be organized by their League by the end of the 2021-2022 school year.
