Meet Maya! Tutor Q & A

Q: When did you start volunteering with us, and why?
A: I started volunteering in January of last year as an evening book club tutor. I attended the 2019 Gala and became enthralled with LVGH: its mission, students, and committed volunteers and knew that was something I wanted to be a part of. After attending tutor training, I was much more confident in my decision given the commitment LVGH has to ensuring volunteers are prepared to teach, especially for someone like me who has never taught.

Q: How is being an LVGH tutor similar or different to what you expected?
A: I was told by other tutors that ultimately I'll end up learning more from the students than I could ever teach them, and I would agree with that. While I'm glad that I'm able to assist the students with vocabulary, pronunciation, etc. each week during book club, I know that I take more away from the class than I likely give.

Q: What is your favorite part about tutoring?
A: My favorite part about tutoring is getting to know the students! Our evening book club is small and I've really enjoyed the opportunity to get to know each of the students on an individual level. Watching everyone progress and encourage one another is hands down my favorite part.

Q: What would you say to someone who is thinking of signing up as an LVGH tutor, or what advice would you give to a new tutor?
A: I would strongly encourage someone who is considering tutoring to go for it! I was quite nervous about signing up given my lack of teaching experience and also a relatively demanding weekly schedule, but tutoring is always the highlight of my week and I'm so glad I decided to sign up!
