We are unrelenting in our pursuit of an equitable and just world

Jill Casey's One Thing

Hello!

As jdc shared in last month’s newsletter, the Luminare Group team is taking turns sharing ONE THING that is giving us focus, joy, challenge, experience...etc. In thinking about what to share, I also thought about going first. Some of my childhood was spent in the world of gymnastics. In team competitions, often the first up on any event had the responsibility of a clean routine. Not the most dazzling or difficult routine, but one consistent enough to set the base from which the dazzling and difficult could be seen as such.

I was rarely first up, not because I dazzled, but because the space between my strengths and weaknesses was vast. I was at my best on beam and floor, but I was super inconsistent on vault and bars...couldn’t be counted on for the clean start.

I was also never last up, which was probably the sport’s greatest gift to me. I was never the best, but I could still feel the incredible charge of hitting my routine at my best and then scream with absolute joy seeing a teammate fly higher.

So here I am, going first. I hope I serve my teammates well and leave you looking forward to what comes next.

My one thing is this video of artist Jack Whitten on art as "structured feelings"

I’m reading “Notes from the Woodshed,” which are Jack Whitten’s journal entries from March 24, 1962 - Dec 27th, 2017. I’ve struggled with reading long-form narrative this last year, but this book is one I can read in bits and chunks.

The book was republished as part of a recent show at Hauser & Wirth in NYC. Living in Brooklyn, I was able to go and be in the presence of Mr. Whitten’s work. There is much in the writing and art of Mr. Whitten that is leading me to reflect on what and how we attempt to understand that which cannot be seen and how this relates to what Jara and our colleagues at EEI remind us is our opportunity and moral imperative

I won’t try to capture all of that here, but I will share that I am aching for more of what lies beyond words.

More of what is formed in what Mr. Whitten refers to as the space between sensibility and plasticity.

More of that which shows us liberation because we are bringing it into being.
