A Hard Day's Night
Turn left at Greenland.
Because A Hard Day's Night is a Beatles movie, it's hard to remember that it is also a wonderful movie. Lighthearted, funny as hell and peppered with, you know, Beatles songs, director Richard Lester married French New Wave style (Louis Malle's 1960 Zazie Dans le Métro was a huge influence) with Liverpudlian charm to make a film that is always a great pleasure to watch. Watch the remastered cut on the Criterion Channel!

Slow Days Fast Company

Eve Babitz is a wholly original voice. Whip smart, funny as shit and profoundly astute, the writing about her native LA in the 60s and 70s belongs in the West Coast canon right next to Slouching Towards Bethlehem. Start with her classic Slow Days, Fast Company and don't look back.

Zwïta Harissa

Tunisian-American brothers Mansour and Karim were sick of seeing the spirit of Tunisian cuisine diluted and bastardized stateside, so they set out to make a line of extraordinary Harissa—from mild to very-not-mild!—that authentically captured the flavors of Tunisia.

Faces Places

In this warm and quirky documentary, legendary filmmaker Agnès Varda teamed up with photographer/muralist JR to travel throughout France, meeting people and making art. It's full of charm and heart.

I Hate Suzie

This brilliant and raucous show from Lucy Prebble and Billie Piper is difficult to describe (the Guardian called Piper's portrayal of Suzie "nude, lewd, and joyously off the rails,” so that gives you a sense), but it sure is a hilarious, bright mess that'll keep you thinking and laughing. Watch it on HBO Max.

Lupin

Smart, sexy, heist-y and French-y, Lupin—a new limited series on Netflix—pulls you in from the first few minutes and doesn't let you go. It's FUN, but not at the expense of gravitas and intrigue—which is largely due to star Omar Sy, who radiates mischief, charisma and heart in equal parts.

DIY Dulce de Leche

Renowned baker David Leibovitz has a trick for making dulce de leche at home that saves you from a fraught afternoon stirring molten hot liquid, and instead requires only a can of sweetened condensed milk and a little patience. This sweet and silky spread isn't always the answer, but from time to time it really, really works.

Books That Matter

To celebrate their 125th anniversary, the New York Times books review curated a selection of their best book reviews written by the giants of the last century—and the combinations are downright delicious. Langston Hughes on James Baldwin's Notes of a Native Son, Nora Ephron on Rex Reed's saucy Do You Sleep in the Nude?, Patti Smith on Murakami's Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage and Eudora Welty's review of E.B. White's Charlotte's Web will bring some delight to even the grumpiest pandemic doldrums.
It's Time to Find a Place

It's time to find a place
to be silent with each other.
I have prattled endlessly
in staff rooms, corridors,
restaurants.
When you're not around
I carry on conversations in
my head.
Even this poem
has forty-eight words too many.
