Happy New Year from the Springbrook Nature Center Foundation (SNCF)! In the spirit and excitement of celebrating all things new for 2021, here are a few new things taking place at Springbrook:

An International Paper Foundation grant funded the creation of a new exhibit that explores camouflage in nature. Springbrook staff member Dina Cyrus created this beautiful exhibit, which features birch casework, bright exhibit graphics, and two live animal enclosures with insects and tree frogs. Be sure to check it out the next time you visit!

Eagle Scout candidate Caden Barber, Troop 9106, New Brighton, designed and installed four post-mounted interpretive signs along the Beaver Pond Trail as his Eagle Scout project. The information on the signs will be changed regularly to share up to date information with Springbrook visitors. Way to go, Caden!

Springbrook Staff are launching a new series of three-part online short courses for adult audiences, called “Curious Connections.” A Birding Basics class was offered on three evenings in January, an Animal Folklore class will be offered in February, and a Maple Syrup Basics workshop is planned for March.

While Springbrook’s popular summer day camp program is not new, there are some new plans in place to make the 2021 camp even more impactful! Most notably, knowing that so many families have been impacted financially by the COVID-19 crisis, we are using donated dollars to broaden the scholarship requirements to allow one camp scholarship per child without the requirement of eligibility for free or reduced lunch benefits. Also, smaller group sizes and enhanced cleaning measures will ensure campers are staying healthy and safe while having fun in nature.

Last fall, we welcomed six new members to the SNCF Board of Directors. Congratulations to Allison Egan, Ross Meisner, Kim Tillberry, Richard Walch, Mary Wright and Jan Wright, and thank you for serving.
