“Don’t limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you. What you believe, remember, you can achieve.”
– Mary Kay As

Showcase Recap

This past year, we held our first ever Virtual Everett Program Showcase and we had so much fun! Our students did amazing presenting their outstanding work. We are impressed by our Everett students every day since they are changing the world one step at a time. We had 100+ attendees who participated and engaged with Everett students at the showcase. With the interactive games we held, we had several participants win Patagonia merch, gift cards and other prizes! We can't wait to see what the future holds for the Everett Program! As always, thank you for all your support.

Project Highlight: Gateways
In less than 3 decades, from 1950-2013, California more than doubled the number of state prisons and increased its incarcerated population by nearly 900%. How exactly did the Golden State become a world leader in mass incarceration?

Gateways began with five undergraduates dedicated to making a change in local recidivism rates.  Over the past year, the Gateways team has expanded to include more students from different socioeconomic, racial, academic, and interest backgrounds. Gateways is run by young changemakers who are committed to addressing the inequities of our criminal justice system – many of which have been exacerbated during the pandemic — and to providing resources to and advocate for those most impacted. Since September 2020, this team developed and taught two workshops on mass incarceration to UCSC students, created materials and platforms for the #StopSanQuentinOutbreak Coalition, and began teaching classes to recently released people. This work was made possible by support for one program manager position, four UC grants to cover program costs, a gift of 25 laptops and required software for classes, and a team of eight undergraduate students.
