Dear People of Hope,

This photo is a screen shot of our Easter worship last year, in partnership with St Andrew's Episcopal Church in College Park.  Many of you may not know how we came to be in this ongoing partnership with our Episcopal neighbors.  For me it is a story of God's presence and provision, of holy synchronicity this year.

In March of 2020 Hope and St Andrew's had a scheduled pulpit swap - one Sunday when the preachers would switch places so each congregation could hear a new voice.  You likely remember that COVID came to our area in March and we moved the pulpit swap online to zoom.  We thought each preacher would take one turn and then we'd get back to our own buildings in a few weeks.  As we realized COVID was continuing, Hope and St Andrew's decided to continue the partnership throughout Holy Week and Easter, then maybe just a few weeks longer... and little by little, we've grown into regular worship partners.  Now Hope and St Andrew's share Kids Sunday School, Adult Education opportunities, and occasional outdoor worship events.

We remain distinct communities, welcoming new members separately, approving budgets separately, etc.  But in a time when many communities are feeling smaller and less vibrant, I find worship larger and more varied.  In a time when many of my colleagues are stretched thin beyond sustainability, I have a new colleague and friend in Father Tim.  We all have extra musicians and office staff to share their talents.

I shared this story in our Congregational Meeting last week.  I continue to be grateful to God and to each of you, for how ministry has continued, grown and even thrived this year.

Peace of Christ, Pastor Julie

Continued prayers for friends and family of Jude
Sunday January 31, 9am

On Monday January 25, Jude M, died unexpectedly.  We continue to pray for people who knew and loved Jude- their family, roommates and friends, Humble Walk students and Hope community, Sunday School children and families.

We will share information about a prayer or memorial service as it becomes available.  In the meantime, we pray:

O God, who brought us to birth, and in whose arms we die, comfort us in our grief and shock at the death of Jude.  Surround us with your love; give us hope in our confusion and grace to release Jude into the embrace of your mercy; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.  Amen.
Kids Sunday School resumes this week
Sunday January 31, 9am

https://umd.zoom.us/j/95610841353?pwd=dnZreHQ4N0FJLytoZG5RRnp2UTVDZz09

Kids and families are invited to join a time of singing, praying and learning about God's love for them and the whole world.  The programming is best-fit for kids aged about 2-8, but anyone is welcome.

This Sunday, the teachers and Pastor Julie will take a special time to talk about one of the Sunday School teachers, Jude, who died suddenly this week and to give the children a chance to share stories or memories if they want to.
Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water and Learning to Love the Bible Again
book discussion Sundays January 10, 17, 24 and 31, 9am
https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86457671507

If the Bible isn’t a science book or an instruction manual, then what is it? What do people mean whey they say the Bible is inspired? When Rachel Held Evans found herself asking these questions, she began a quest to better understand what the Bible is and how it is meant to be read. What she discovered change her and it will change you too.  Join adults from Hope and St Andrews for this discussion group.
Hope's Development Discernment
Pray, find documents online, ask questions
watch for sign-up for small groups

Hope's Council is inviting all people to engage in a discernment process about a possible property sale and redevelopment.  Recently, many people gathered to learn about a development proposal Hope has received.  If you couldn't make this meeting, find resources online and plan to join the next large group meeting.

1) Join council in praying, using this and other prayers:
O God, you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the endings, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils and joys unknown.  Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

2) Find documents and past zoom meeting here. (listen or ask for the password):

movies@hope presented Being There
Friday, February 5 at 7:30 pm

Join us as movies@hope proudly presents Being There.  This Oscar-winning comedy from 1980 asks what has become an all too relevant question these days, what happens when the absurdly improbable becomes real?  The great Peter Sellers stars as a sheltered estate gardener whose entire experience of the outside world comes from watching TV.  By chance he becomes a trusted advisor to the president of the U.S., who takes his naive utterances as pearls of wisdom.  Associate Professor Mary Dutterer of Prince George's and Howard County Community Colleges will introduce this classic, recently placed on the National Film Registry.
