Looking Forward

The "New Normal" can be hard in that there always seems to be new rules to learn and new recommendations to follow.  As we plan for the future, still a murky unknown in so many ways, your librarians try to focus on the positive. This newsletter is all about looking forward and the ways we plan to bring you many of the things you missed during 2020, albeit in a new way.
Be well.  Be safe.  Be kind.
Please feel free to contact me any time at jperrin@townofjaffrey.com.
Kind regards, Julie M. Perrin, Library Director - a.k.a. Ms. Julie
My Favorite Place
Second and third grade students in Ms. Sorrentino's class at Jaffrey Grade School chose a favorite place in Jaffrey, learned more about it, and created an advertisement for it.  This young patron chose the library!
Ms. Julie was so proud, she shared it with all the other librarians and trustees in New Hampshire, and her inbox has been flooded with rave reviews.
Click this link to see his awesome presentation, now featured on our website.  Be sure to watch the video, too!
Thank you, Dax!  We can't wait until you are old enough to work at the library.

Even More Expanded Services

New Saturday hours start February 6th!
Beginning February 6th, the library will expand Saturday Grab & Go appointments to be from 11 am - 1 pm.  We have noticed a high demand for pickup times on Saturdays so we are pleased to expand this timeslot.

Computers available during all appointment times

We now offer computer use appointments during BOTH Bookworm Boogie and Grab & Go hours.  While we don't allow walk-ins at this service level, you can truly call ahead by just a few minutes and ask if we have a computer available for that same day, or even for that time.  We hope this will make it easier, too, for our students to come by after school.  We have now opened two rooms for computer use so you can stay comfortably spread out.
We do ask that you limit your computer use appointment to 30 minutes and that you clean your work area before you leave.  We will provide disinfecting wipes. Thanks for your help!

In case you missed the announcement in the last newsletter, Inter-library Loan to resume in February!
The Background Info:  We wanted to have you back in the building browsing your collection before we started loaning your items to other libraries, so we held back on resuming inter-library loan for a few months since borrowing is a two-way street. We also wanted to be sure that safety protocols were in place before borrowing from other areas of the state.  Even now, many other libraries are having to close or cut back services due to Covid, and state library van routes are experiencing cancellations and delays for the same reason.
The Plan to Return to ILL:  We plan to resume inter-library loan in mid-February on a limited basis. For the reasons above, we will begin accepting ILL requests the week of February 15, but will limit you to just one request at a time.  We have over 35,000 physical items available for checkout in the building and another 66,000 available digitally, so we hope limiting you to just one inter-library loan request doesn't feel like deprivation.  We just want to start slowly, acknowledging that Covid often causes staffing shortages at libraries everywhere.  Please be patient, too, as quarantine times and van delays could cause significant wait times.

Registration Now Open for Downsizing & Decluttering!

Thursday, February 4 at 11:00 am
Join us via Zoom, presented by AARP New Hampshire Speakers Bureau.
You can’t take it with you! Having too much "stuff" can impede people from comfortably aging in place and getting health care into their homes, or from relocating or downsizing to a smaller home. Stuff makes it more difficult on family when they have to settle your estate. This presentation explores why stuff is so important for some people and teaches practical, easy-to-follow downsizing and decluttering tips to get your home and office organized, and offers opportunities for participants to share their tips and experiences.

Join us to learn how to get started and move forward through the process!
Registration is required to receive the Zoom link.  Register here.

Free Tax Help with AARP -- The Details

Our Friends at AARP will again offer free tax help at the library, but in a new way.
The library expects to receive tax packets from AARP by the week of February 1, which will include all the information from the tax aides on what you need to do, along with a phone number to make an appointment with them at the library.  These appointments must be made through AARP.  The appointments will be brief, and the tax aides will prepare your returns off site, and call you when it is time to make an appointment to pick up your completed return.
The library will provide a space for all appointments.  Masks will be required.
If you would like to reserve a tax packet, please call the library at 532-7301. We will reserve one for you and call you when we receive them to arrange pickup.

Pajama Storytime, now on Facebook Live

Pajama Storytime on Facebook LIVE -- Weekly on Tuesdays at 6:30 pm
Do you know how to say DINOSAUR in American Sign Language (ASL)?  You do if you joined us for stories!
The library team is starting your bedtime routine every Tuesday evening with a story via Facebook LIVE, including an ASL component.  While we hope you will join us live, the recorded event will stay linked on our Facebook page until the following Monday.  To help you continue the tradition all week, we have also prepared Pajama Storytime Kits for checkout with books, musical stories, and even flashlight fun to encourage reading under the covers!

Ollie's Staycation

Ollie can't travel during Covid, but we found a way for you to make your own Ollie.  Take him on a Staycation at your home and then share your adventures with the real Ollie and your librarians!
Pick up your Ollie Staycation packet in the lobby or the Lab during your next visit!
Thank you, CLiF!
A big thank you to the Children's Literacy Foundation, for our 2021 At-Risk Children's grant award which will allow us to provide a library for children and families served by Shelter from the Storm.
The grant will also provide a great storytelling event and book giveaway for all of our families.  Watch for details in the months ahead.
