Announcements

New Program Directive 2021-01: Change in Mileage Reimbursement Rate

Effective January 1, 2021, the University’s mileage reimbursement rate for expenses incurred in connection with the use of a private automobile has been revised in accordance with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) standard mileage rates published in IRS Notice 2021-02. Employees may claim a mileage reimbursement rate of 56 cents per mile when using their personal vehicle for authorized CFHL, UC business travel. This represents a decrease from the previous year’s rate.
 
The new CFHL, UC Program Directive and updated CFHL, UC Mileage Log are available for download from the CFHL, UC website. Please share this information with your staff.

Child Nutrition Advisory Council Member Recruitment 2021

The California Department of Education Nutrition Services Division is recruiting members for the State Superintendent of Public Instruction’s Child Nutrition Advisory Council (CNAC). The following positions are open for recruitment:
  • School Board Member
  • Curriculum Coordinator
  • Food Service Supervisor/Manager
  • Food Service Director
  • Nutrition Education Specialist
  • Parent–Teacher Association (PTA) or Organization (PTO) Representative
  • Lay Person
Additional information is located at https://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/nu/he/cnac.asp (scroll down to the heading “Member Application Information” to find a link to the application). The application also explains about the CNAC, the open positions, time commitment, and more.
The application must be received via email by Friday, February 12, 2021, 5PM. Applications dated or time-stamped on or before but received after February 12, 2021 will not be accepted.

CalFresh Healthy Living Peer Exchange Program

Are you looking for ideas or assistance from your LIA peers around the state? Are you able to share your knowledge with your LIA peers? If so, the Peer Exchange Program can connect you with an LIA peer via phone call or web-based call! The Peer Exchange Program can:
  • Connect you with another agency working on the same topic or same setting
  • Help coordinate, plan, and facilitate your exchange
  • Provide conference call lines or web-based meeting software
CDPH is currently recruiting Peer Exchange Program LIA Mentors and Mentees!

2021 ASNNA Conference Save the Date!

Description: The Association of SNAP Nutrition Education Administrators (ASNNA) is a professional organization for SNAP Nutrition Education administrators who are dedicated to improving the nutritional status of SNAP recipients and those eligible for SNAP-Ed. The goal of the 2021 conference will focus on promoting equity in SNAP-Ed and best practices for adapting programming during COVID-19. The conference website is live. CFHL 2021 Virtual Forum: Improving Health Equity in a Virtual World

COVID-19 Equity and Access Checklist

Developed by the COVID-19 Equity and Access Workgroup, the purpose of the checklist is to identify strategies to ensure all SNAP-Ed eligible communities have access to the distance learning resources that we develop. Use this "internal" tool as a guide for your conversations with your stakeholders to assess their needs and ways that CFHL, UCCE can support them. The checklist is posted in the COVID-19 Equity and Access Workgroup Box folder here.

CFHL, UCCE Santa Clara Recieves Recognition From District

Campbell Unified School District recognized CFHL, UCCE Santa Clara County at a recent board meeting for continued activities in the district. This includes seedling distributions for home gardens, indirect education, direct education, and PSE work related to school meals. This district relationship has remained strong in spite of COVID challenges.

CFHL, UCCE Shasta Cluster Offers Teachers Lesson Packets

To bring healthy education back into the classroom, the Shasta Cluster is re-energizing classrooms by offering teachers lesson packets that coordinate Healthy Living campaigns such as Health Awareness Campaigns and celebratory events such as Rethink Your Drink Day, National Breakfast Week, Sleep Awareness Month, Physical Fitness Promotion, Sport Month, and Earth Day with curriculum.

Each grade level has a flyer featuring four lessons from the grade specific curriculum highlighting key features: planting, sleep, physical activity, breakfast, and healthy beverages. The teacher can enroll in the CalFresh Healthy Living, UCCE program and select the lesson packet/s they wish to receive. Packets will come equipped with materials needed to carry out the activities as well as lesson enhancements to excite their students including stickers, pencils, bookmarks, and extra promotional materials.

2021 Gro More Good Grassroots Grant

Organization: The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation and KidsGardening
Description: The 2021 GroMoreGood Grassroots Grant is designed to bring the life-enhancing benefits of gardens to communities across the United States. Awards provide funding for the development of new and expansion of existing youth garden programs and greenspaces serving 15 or more youth. Winners will be selected based on their commitment to the maintenance and sustainability of their garden program including plans for growth and future fiscal stability.

Team Nutrition Taste of CA Recipe Challenge

Organization: California Department of Education
Description: The Taste of CA Challenge grant will provide $8,500 to $24,000 to school food authorities to develop standardized recipes featuring CA locally grown products for school meal service. The award will also support participation in regional training and professional learning, as well as implementation of nutrition education, food literacy, and community engagement activities.

  • Please use the CalFresh Healthy Living, UC SMART Objectives to identify which of the three EATS modules (e.g., Fruits and Vegetables (FV), Sweetened Beverages and Water (SB), and/or Physical Activity (PA)) are most appropriate to administer to evaluate the diverse series-based direct education and PSE interventions you deliver. You can use the new EATS-MS/HS survey with middle or high school students in schools or other settings where at least six sessions of series-based direct education are delivered virtually over four or more weeks. The 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans

Author/Organization: U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services 
Summary: The USDA has released the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, our national nutrition guidance document that comes out just once every five years. For the first time, dietary advice for infant, toddler, and maternal and breastfeeding populations has been included in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Studies Suggest Vaccinated People Protected From New COVID-19 Variants

Summary: New research provides reassuring evidence that people vaccinated against coronavirus will be protected against emerging new variants of the virus. Two teams tested two of the new variants against blood taken from people who had received the full two-course dose of either the Moderna or the Pfizer vaccine. Read more.
