Greetings

At four months, your baby is probably starting to show more interest in the surrounding environment. This is the age when babies start to reach out for objects, turn towards sounds, and smile when they see you. Your baby is probably still struggling for coordination, but you're likely seeing a little more strength and control in their movements. This month, we offer a couple more activities to encourage the development of strength and coordination.

Activities that you can do

Here are some activities that you can try with your baby this month.
1. Row Row Row Your Boat song

Sit face-to-face with your baby on a soft surface and place cushions to support their back. Hold your baby's hands gently and pull them forward slowly while singing the nursery song “Row Row Row Your Boat.” Slowly push your baby backwards then pull forwards again. Repeat this motion as if your baby is rowing a boat. If you don’t know the song, you can learn “Row Row Row Your Boat” with this video.
2. Movement on rolled yoga mat

Place your baby on their tummy and place a rolled yoga mat under their chest. Place the yoga mat so that it sits under your baby's armpits. The yoga mat provides support when your baby tries to push up their head. This activity helps your baby build arm and core strength, which is good preparation for learning to crawl.

And if you find you're eager for more ideas on things to do with your baby now, and in the future, here's a list of 30 engaging baby activities for cognitive & physical development.
Remember: If your baby begins to fuss or cry during any of these activities, it might be a sign that they're hungry or need a rest.

Tips for your own self-care

Having a baby doesn’t mean you have to stop having adventures. At four months old, your baby is gaining strength and stamina, but is still very “portable.” Once your baby begins to crawl and walk, you may hear more complaints about being strapped into a sling or stroller, but at this age, many babies are game for a change of scene. Here are six tips to help you prepare for more ambitious outings with your baby.

Things to watch for this month

These are some of the things that your baby might be doing this month:
  • Supporting some weight on their legs
  • Rolling from front to side
  • Lifting the head about 90 degrees
  • Sitting with their arms propped
  • Reaching for objects
  • Holding hands together
