Friends,
I’ve been thinking this week about 1 Timothy 2:1-4
I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
Every four years we go through a transfer of power where half the nation is optimistic and hopeful and half the nation is concerned and anxious. However we feel this week, let’s be obedient to the God’s word and come to the Lord in prayer for the nation.
Sometimes it’s hard to know exactly what to pray. This week I’ve been gravitating to some prayers found in The Anglican Church of North America Book of Common Prayer.
Below are three short prayers (among many) that I found helpful. I offer these to you today as a guide for you as you pray for the nation this week:
FOR THE PEACE OF THE WORLD
Eternal God, in whose perfect kingdom no sword is drawn but the sword of righteousness, no strength known but the strength of love: So mightily spread abroad your Spirit, that all peoples may be gathered under the banner of the Prince of Peace; to whom be dominion and glory, now and for ever. Amen.
FOR CIVIL AUTHORITIES
Almighty God, our heavenly Father, send down on those who hold public office the spirit of wisdom, charity, and justice; that with steadfast purpose they may faithfully serve in their offices to promote the wellbeing of all people; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
FOR OUR ENEMIES
O God, the Creator of all, whose Son commanded us to love our enemies: Lead them and us from prejudice to truth; deliver them and us from hatred, cruelty, and revenge; and in your good time enable us all to stand reconciled before you in Jesus Christ; in whose Name we pray. Amen.
God is faithful.
