What are we thinking about this week?

First Year Graduate Student Dandan Xu is looking at:

Zhang Hongtu's reworking of one of the landscape paintings by Ma Yuan, a Chinese painter who was active in the twelfth century.

Dandan says, "the image calls attention to the environmental pollution in today's China. How can our discussions of such kinds of paintings engage with larger issues such as environmental pollution and climate change?"

Dandan Xu studies the visual and material culture of late imperial China. She received her M.A. in East Asian Art at the University of Kansas in May 2020, where she began her art history journey. Before embarking on her study of art history, she earned her doctoral degree in Chinese literature at Fudan University in China in 2017.
