ROMUALD VALOT
Words by Dan Watts

Romuald Valot beckons mystery. Sommeliers are mad about his graceful lively wines and he is a cult favourite amongst winemakers in Beaujolais. Yet, the ‘Biosophiste’ Batman has only started to make a name for himself in the last 5 years. Well, at least this version has, Valot 2.0.

The son of winemakers from Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, when earlier-version Valot graduated from high school he immediately set out to work in the many vineyards of Burgundy. Inheriting the family vineyard in Chambolle-Musigny down the line didn’t hurt either, as he got the ability to tend to some very special vines. Indeed, if you dig deep you will find Valot’s name grace some Premier Cru Pinot going back a couple of decades.

Nowadays however, Valot steers clear of his past, “many people think I work the same way as my father, but that’s not the case – I’m making Beaujolais here, not Burgundy!" Valot 2.0 is carving out a different path, an extreme off-road that the ‘Gang of Four’ wouldn't even dare venturing down. Vibrant wild grass grows fruitfully between the rows, no spraying of any kind and overall he harvests quite low yields.

“...my role is to produce in the healthiest way possible and to give the maximum pleasure I can in each bottle.”

Both fermentation and elevage of his wines are done in neutral wood and no sulphur is added to the wines. They are raw, unfiltered with nothing added or taken away. Valot seeks purity first and foremost, “It’s about the wisdom and respect of nature – I am first and foremost a farmer, and my role is to produce in the healthiest way possible and to give the maximum pleasure I can in each bottle.”

Valot vinifies at the crossroads of Beaujolais and Rhône, in Beaujeu, not far from the River Sâone and a stone's throw away from Régnié where he has a small plot. His other vineyards are in Chenas, Côtes de Brouilly, Chardonnay and he also has 3 hectares of Beaujolais-Villages level. On each bottle under his name runs ‘Biosophiste’ - it sums up Valot well. A crazy scientist who studies the art of intelligent life, in the shape of grapes and natural wine.
