Hello Lovely Reader

It's Tuesday. It's February. It's still Lockdown 3, at least for me, in the UK.

Some lucky countries are almost back to normal, others like the UK and US are taking a little longer (and that's all I'm going to say about that!) But if you are locked down and unable to work, or self-isolating with symptoms, the chances are you've worked your way through Netflix - yep, even those shows you initially thought, 'I'm not fussed about that' - you've re-read your favourite novels and loaded up your Kindle or bookshelves with new titles.

Maybe, after 10 months, you're looking around for something different - new authors, books in a different genre?

Well, you're in luck, because I've got some great suggestions of where to look for your next favourite read - my inbox. Or more precisely, I'm going to share a few newsletters I've subscribed to recently, in case you want to check them out.

LitNuts

First up is LitNuts, which "was created to bring the best of independent, university, small and micro presses to booklovers." ie. created to share with people books from small publishers like Vine Leaves Press (publisher of awesome books like Grace & Serenity 😉) and amazing self-published books from authors like Jane Davis (who I highly recommend).

Sign up to their newsletter and receive fantastic suggestions every Monday, Wednesday and Friday!

The Fussy Librarian

Another list I subscribe to is The Fussy Librarian which focuses more on ebook bargains - free and discounted ones. You can choose from a list of 40 genres to tailor the suggestions to titles you'll really be interested in.

Sign up to their newsletter here.

50 Give or Take

Do you like short stories? How about really short stories? I've mentioned 50 Give or Take a couple of times on my Facebook page, so you might have already checked it out. My publisher is sending daily newsletters with 50 word stories (give or take). From the brutal, poetic, romantic, or thought-provoking, these stories are gems which really pack a punch. I highly recommend them.

Sign up to the newsletter here, and perhaps consider submitting a couple yourself

Flash Fiction Magazine

And finally, Flash Fiction Magazine sends you a short story a day (or as a weekly round-up, if you prefer) and focuses on longer stories - perfect with a cuppa and a biscuit or two.

Sign up here, and you can also download a free book which contains some of their best previously published stories.

I hope you've been inspired to look up one or two of these suggestions. If so, I'd love to know what you think!

Literary bits and bobs

This month, I have mostly been...

Reading...

The Confession by Jessie Burton.

It's quite a light, easy read, but with enough story and intrigue to keep me turning the pages. There are questions to be pondered, and a central puzzle which drives Rose onwards. I enjoyed it, although some of the later chapters seemed bogged down in description when I just wanted the story to be resolved. I may or may not have skimmed a couple of pages... 🤨

Learning...

some new kettlebell exercises for when I can finally get back to teaching classes. I know I seem to mention my day job more when I'm not doing it than when I am, but this is the period when I've got time to play around and mix things up.

If you've never used kettlebells, they're great fun and give a very different feel to even the most basic of exercises. I'd recommend them, but prices are currently at a premium due to everyone working out at home and rushing to buy new kit!
Book Spotlight

Our Beautiful Child was published in 2014 - a trilogy of novellas all centred around one pub, The Boathouse - a strange, unnerving place which attracts misfits.

All three main characters in this book are running away from something. In fact, most of the characters I've ever written are running away. No one ever seems to want to confront their problems until they have no other choice.

The title story was such fun to write. Of the three, it's the most spooky, and I had fun learning how the ghosts in this 'world' interacted with the real world.

Have you read it? What did you think? You can read some reviews of it here, and you can pick up a copy here 😉

If you have read it, please consider reviewing it. Even older books need some love.
Thanks for reading. See you next month!
