COVID-19 update for the Garden

Sadly we have been unable to open the garden this year due to the current COVID restrictions.  Our priority is to ensure everyone is kept safe and for this reason the garden is currently closed.  We hope that very soon we can re-open and Peter, our community gardener has been busy planting seeds and getting things growing at home.  When we do open our gates again we may resort to a rota system of volunteers so as to comply to the Government guidelines - keep an eye on our Facebook page and website for further updates.

Even though our Garden is closed we are always looking for new volunteers to join our team, volunteering opportunities range from general garden work, planning and running events, creating blogs and podcast, joining our committee, creating posters and leaflets and much more.  If you’re interested please get in touch with Ali: volunteer@tayportgarden.org.

Growing update from the Garden

With the continuing lockdown affecting access to community growing spaces and garden centres, Peter`s latest blog gives ideas for individuals and families to do at home to prepare for growing veg, fruit and flowers for the coming season. The PLANT gardeners have been busy as usual, eagerly preparing for their return to the garden.  Ordering seeds, planning, planting some tried and tested first early potatoes and much more.

Keep an eye out on our social media for upcoming demonstrations and for further tips and ideas. In the meantime you may want to watch a video from our last online gardening wokshop on planning for fruit growing. Happy gardening!

Host an Evening with Climate!

Do you want to do something powerful about climate emergency and recovery from COVID-19? It’s as simple as hosting an online party with your friends, family or community group!

In February, we are launching our new Evenings with Climate to help you do just that. By hosting an Evening with Climate you can help create a much needed momentum for effective action on climate emergency and COVID-19 recovery here, in Tayport, and beyond. You provide the guests and we do all the rest – including party treats! Want to hear more? Sign up to hosting here. We will get in touch to explain the format and all the support we provide. You can also find out more on our website.

If you are ready to take things a step further and find out how your family can reduce their own carbon footprint, join one of our Carbon Conversation groups – get in touch with Kaska on blog@tayportgarden.org.

Valentines day 14th February - Show the love around Tayport

To celebrate Valentine’s day this year we are linking in with The Climate Coalition’s ‘show the love’ campaign which runs from February 1st to 21st.

`Show the love` is an annual celebration of everything we care about and want to protect from the current climate crisis we are facing.  Using the power of green hearts it seeks to raise awareness, let those in power know about our concerns for the planet and do more to tackle the climate crisis.  We want you to create your own green heart with a drawing of something you feel needs to be protected and place it in your window for everyone to see. Or you could paint a pebble and put it on your doorstep.

Let’s fill Tayport with love this Valentine's Day!!

A celebration of Veganuary
It’s been a bit of a record month. Half a million people signed up for the Veganuary this year, taking up a challenge to eat vegan for the month. That’s double of the last year’s numbers. Vegan bug certainly seems to be in the air! Hoping to demystify the vegan concept a little and find out what it is like to eat and indeed to be a vegan, Kathleen has spoken to a few of Tayport’s own vegan residents:

Placement students

Our placement student Laura was very busy towards the end of 2020, getting involved with activities at the garden and putting on fun weekly activities for our online Alzheimer group.  Alongside this she was involved with a variety of projects at the Larick centre.  Her official placement ended in December and a big thank you to her from all at PLANT. She is keen to still be involved with TCT in 2021 which is great news!

We have welcomed another student, Heather, from Dundee Uni who is in her 3rd year of a Community Education degree. She will be with us until March which is great news and we look forward to enjoying a great placement with her.

A wonderfully juicy project

Our 2020 Tayport Apple Juice project produced a huge 1527 litres of pasteurised juice filling 509 pouches corresponding to roughly 2.5 tonnes of apples. This has prevented 8 tonnes of carbon emissions compared to this volume of apple juice being purchased from a supermarket! A brilliant community effort and thank you so much you to all those who donated apples and those who helped with picking and processing. The juice has now sold out with profits being put back onto PLANT and Larick Centre projects.

A huge thank you to Tesco's Riverside branch for donating grocery trays for storing the apples which made the process much easier and reduced wastage.
