OU Names New Dean of Libraries

The University of Oklahoma has announced the appointment of Denise Stephens as dean of OU Libraries, pending OU Board of Regents’ approval. She will begin her role at OU on May 24. Stephens, an OU alumna and previous OU Libraries employee, will return to her alma mater from Washington University in St. Louis, where she serves as vice provost and university librarian. Read more
 

Mellon Grant Awarded to OU’s Native American Studies Initiative

A recent grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation will establish a new fellowship program at the University of Oklahoma to educate and empower students to make a difference in Indian Country. The four-year grant for $749,240 was awarded to the Department of Native American Studies and Native Nations Center at OU, and the funding will support the establishment of the Mellon Foundation Impact Fellows Initiative at OU. Read more
 

Anderson Recognized by Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence for Mentorship

Ron Anderson, Assistant Professor of Management at the Michael F. Price College of Business, has been recognized by the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence for his mentorship efforts. The Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence is a statewide nonprofit that recognizes and encourages academic excellence in Oklahoma’s public schools. Through its statewide mentoring initiative, the foundation promotes the growth and development of quality youth mentoring programs. The foundation works with school districts and mentoring organizations to promote mentoring as a positive step toward academic success. Learn more
 

Call for Undergraduate Course Development Proposals

The Institute for the Study of Human Flourishing, in collaboration with The Center for Faculty Excellence, is pleased to announce a grant-funded initiative from the John Templeton Foundation, to provide stipends and discretionary funds for new or redesigned course development that incorporates virtues into the curriculum meaningfully and pedagogically. The course development stipends and discretionary funds are intended to support faculty across disciplines who wish to develop innovative methods for cultivating virtues and assessing the outcomes of these strategies. Stipends in the amount of $2,000 and discretionary funds in the amount of $250 each will be available for approved new courses in four disciplines: Fine Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, and STEM. Learn more

ORCiD/SciENcv Training Webinar

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is requiring proposals submitted on or after October 5, 2020 to provide biosketches and current and pending funded programs in a specific format. This format can be produced through a SciENcv (a program managed by NIH/NCBI) – which will pull your information from ORCiD and hold your information for edits further down the road, or through a fillable pdf (biosketchcurrent and pending).This webinar will present a PowerPoint to walk you through the process of 1) signing up for your ORCiD and populating your information fields, 2) the process of signing up for your NCBI account, and 3) how to create your SciENcv. Software Carpentry Lesson

Python is a popular language for scientific computing, and great for general-purpose programming as well. This is a beginner-level workshop for researchers presented by OU Libraries. Pandemic Then (and Now): COVID-19 through the Lens of the 1918 Influenza Pandemic

The webinar series “Humanity and Health” serves as a focus for research and reflection about the social, economic, psychological, educational, and public health crises caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Nancy Bristow will lead this free Humanity and Health webinar focused on the 1918 Influenza epidemic, and how the lessons learned by public health officials then apply to the COVID-19 epidemic. Writing Enriched Curriculum: Social Annotations with Hypothes.is

This ongoing Canvas module will introduce you to a new Canvas-based annotation tool that expands traditional solitary reading into a discussion in the margins of a text. By creating virtual margins on a PDF or web page, the Hypothes.is app allows students to read and respond to each other’s annotations. The app works with Canvas’s assignments and SpeedGrader functions; it features a home page that allows you to quickly assess participation. We will look at a number of ways to use this tool for writing- and discussion-based pedagogies, and in both hybrid and online courses. Workshop Series: Writing the One-page Summary for Agency RFPs (continued)

Proposal abstracts and summaries are the first piece of your writing a Program Manager uses to decide whether or not they are interested in your proposed work. It is crucial that this element is technically grounded, interesting, and flows logically. Researchers are invited to join this series of five workshop sessions to select a relevant funding opportunity, consider the budget, and reach out to a Program Manager with a developed proposal summary. Big Idea Challenge: Oral Presentations

Eleven semi-finalists have been invited to give short presentations on their proposals for the second phase of review of OU’s Big Idea Challenge. Each talk will be 10 minutes, followed by 5 minutes Q&A. The Big Idea Challenge will provide resources to transdisciplinary teams for projects that position the university as a leader in generating new insights and contributions to solving regional, national and global challenges in security, sustainability, health and communities.
