AUUF Sunday Service
"The Heart of Abolition: How to Build a World of Accountability, Not Punishment"
Rev. Chris Rothbauer

Many view abolition as a narrow set of political demands that seem far-fetched and out of reach. However, abolition can be viewed as an ethic that permeates our lives by changing how we interact with each other. In this service, Rev. Chris will explore how abolition, as an ethic, is fully compatible with Unitarian Universalist principles and values.

Religious Exploration Moment

Hello AUUF families! What a month this has already been, eh? Sometimes the events of the world offer us opportunities to move from desolation to consolation at a pace that is almost too fast to keep up with.

Life is constantly in flux. No matter how sunny today is, we know from experience that clouds might very well return tomorrow. And while we might wish the sun would just stick around, we know the clouds bring rain that the flowers need to grow in the springtime. But cloudy days can still be a bummer…
One good lesson we can teach our children is how to bring their own light to the inevitable dark days. This week’s family project invites you to help your kids assemble a Happiness Box. What is a Happiness Box, you might ask? A Happiness Box is filled with things that make you feel better. The beauty of creating a Happiness Box is that it can make you feel good on the day you build it, AND on the day when nothing seems to be going right and you decide to pull it out.
What goes in a Happiness Box? Well that depends…what things make you happy? Some of the suggestions I’ve heard are pictures of our favorite people (moms, dads, grandparents, cousins, our best friends), maybe a favorite book, maybe a souvenir from a favorite trip, maybe a game your family likes to play together, maybe a small snuggly stuffy, maybe some art supplies…the possibilities are really limitless! The key is to think about the things that make YOU the happiest. Then, when you’re having an especially hard day, you can open up your Happiness Box and be reminded that as grey as your current day is, there is always sunshine available if you just remember to look behind the clouds (or in this case, in your Happiness Box!)

Upcoming Services

Profits Over People: Exploring the Injustice of Our Prison System
January 31, 2021

Recently, Gov. Ivey proposed opening three new for-profit private prisons in the state of Alabama. In our fifth Sunday social justice service, we will examine how the prison system fails to honor the worth and dignity of thousands of people and take action for justice in Alabama’s prison system.
An Abundance of Connections
February 7, 2021

This year has really highlighted our need for community. In our stewardship kickoff service, we’ll examine how AUUF has been a lifeline for so many people this year and how we promote connections in our fellowship and the larger community.
