Dear NEaT members,
Happy New Year! I hope that you had a relaxing Christmas and that your working year has got off to a good start. We have a great offering of events, both educational and social, in the coming winter and spring season. I’m delighted that we have such active volunteers, such as in the Education and Events committees, who organize interesting events for all of us and keep us connected, even when we can’t meet physically. This year NEaT will continue to promote our members’ interests by educating and advocating. Thanks for being a member, and I look forward to seeing you at a NEaT event soon! Editing workshop in March
Ever wonder how other editors work? What choices do editors make? Often we get stuck in our own habits and patterns of working, and taking a peek into someone else’s editing methods and ideas can be very beneficial for refreshing and developing your own skills. This spring the NEaT Education Committee led by Alice Lehtinen will do an online editing workshop. More details to come soon!
Save the date of the first "English as Lingua Nordica" seminar

We’re excited to be planning our first seminar in cooperation with Nordic Culture Point. Taking place both online and at NCP’s premises in Kaisaniemi, Helsinki, the seminar will feature three established speakers tackling the topic of English as Lingua Nordica from different, perhaps controversial, viewpoints. Several NEaT members in the team to translate The Economist’s World Reviews into Finnish
In August 2019, NEaT board member Kenneth Quek wrote a message to the nordic-edit emailing list. He had news of an exciting project that required multiple English-to-Finnish translators. The Swedish publisher InPress was planning to translate The Economist's annual magazine The World into Finnish and was looking for “people with Finnish as their native language with an excellent command of English”. Several NEaT members took the bait, and we are happy to report that two reviews have now been professionally translated and published in Finnish by the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat: Maailma 2020 and Maailma 2021.
The “NEaT translation team for The Economist” includes Virve Juhola, Tomi Snellman, Eeva Tynkkynen, Sirpa Venäläinen and Emma Voutilainen. The following quotes have been translated from Finnish to English by Virve.
“For me this was one of the most interesting translation projects of the year because such catchy and high-profile journalistic content does not land on the desk every day. Transferring it to another language is of course a challenge, but an inspiring one,” says Sirpa.
“I agree: this was a very challenging but rewarding project, and one from which to always learn new, about cricket, for example... There really is power in networking,” says Eeva.
“I browsed through the published magazine, and everyone’s translations read really well -- I’m hesitant to read my own, though!” says Emma.
“I’m positively surprised we’re so many from NEaT in the team. I’m specialized in arts and humanities, so the culture section fell naturally to my hands,” says Tomi.
“Special thanks to Kenneth for sharing this top project to NEaT members. We’re so happy to be part of this team and already looking forward to next year’s project. This is an example of how NEaT can benefit both members and clients: clients find professional services, and members can share the best projects that match their areas of interest and expertise,” says Virve.

Making Your Website Work
NEaT member Jenny Zonneveld has written a book review for us of Gill Andrews’s Making Your Website Work: 100 Copy & Design Tweaks for Smart Business Owners. Jenny is a business translator and copywriter at TranslaText based in the Netherlands. She’s also an active member of NEaT’s sister society SENSE, a former chair and currently the webmaster. Communication for All
NEaT board member Kate Sotejeff-Wilson wrote a review about Maija Hirvonen and Tuija Kinnunen’s (eds.) Finnish book Saavutettava viestintä (Accessible Communications).
“This book could not be more timely. [It] was published at the end of the year when the world shut shut down, everything closed, and everyone was expected to move their lives online. But going virtual and digital is easier for some than others,” Kate writes. Read more on the NEaT website here.

The Call for Papers for the Finnish Translation and Interpreting Studies conference is out, let’s get some NEaT members presenting! Proposals for session presentations and posters must be submitted no later than Sunday, 31 January 2021.
Please note that separate proposals for thematic session presentations must also be submitted, clearly indicating to which thematic session the presentation belongs. Proposals of up to 2,500 characters, including spaces, but excluding references, should be submitted in rtf, doc, or docx format in email attachments to katu2021@helsinki.fi.
