What is the story of Chicago? When you tell your friends and family about our city, what words come to mind?
In a city where rates of food insecurity reach heights of up to 85% in locations concentrated on our south and west sides, one may say the story of Chicago is one of food apartheid. In a city where those very communities are largely populated by black and brown residents, it can be argued the story of Chicago is one of racially motivated divestment.
At the same time, the story of Chicago is a group of amazing farmers who are doing the work to uplift our food system and keep Chicago fed. And through AUA’s programming, they are building collaborative relationships, a stronger network of urban growers, and a more resilient food system. With this in mind, let's continue to reimagine and work towards a local food system which centers the rights of all people to do the most simple thing - eat.
