Three Steps to Fight Online Disinformation and Extremism
It is no understatement to say that the last few weeks have reshaped the landscape of information warfare. The online playing field, long tilted toward toxicity by algorithms and social-media executives devoted to keeping people clicking, has begun to be righted. The biggest superspreader of online lies has been deplatformed, tens of thousands of conspiracy theorists and extremists have seen their accounts purged, and the plug has been pulled on various hubs of racism like Parler. These actions altered the online back-and-forth between truth and lies, separating the eras of “before Jan. 6” and “after.”

[Opinion] Reframing the BARMM transition discourse
The Rapid Midterm Review on the Bangsamoro Transition Period released by the Mindanao Peoples Caucus in October 2020 created a flurry of heated discussions on social media, particularly on the report’s top recommendation to extend the period of transition for another three years. Some fear that the issue has become divisive especially among Bangsamoro peace advocates. It is therefore important to carve a space where, instead of having a “zero-sum” debate between those who are for or against the extension, both sides reframe the discussion to focus on the purpose of the extension and for whom it is intended. Establishing a clear set of parameters to follow during the extension will ensure that the targets will be met while protecting the interests of the Bangsamoro people.

[Opinion] One question for Gen. Carlito Galvez Jr.
During the past few days, the “Man of the Hour” has been former AFP chief of staff, Gen. Carlito Galvez Jr., who has been facing a Senate inquiry on the government’s vaccination program. In March 2020, General Galvez was appointed chief implementer of the COVID-19 National Task Force, and his latest title since November has been that of “vaccine czar.” So for the last 10 months, he has been active in closely-related roles, being a vital part of the national effort to address the pandemic facing the nation. Actually, many Filipinos have scant knowledge of General Galvez. Like many of the current AFP chiefs, he was in this position for only a couple of months before he was tapped to be the presidential adviser on the peace process in 2018.
