IAB Life Science Seminar Series

PICTURE A SCIENTIST
Friday, Feb 12 @ 1PM via Zoom

This film chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries - including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists - who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.
This is the UAF presentation of the Alaska INBRE-purchased agreement that allows this award-winning film to be shown at all of our partner institutions - UAA, UAS, UAF, ANTHC, and Southcentral Foundation. UAS premiered Picture a Scientist as part of the Power & Privilege Symposium in November. Look for more information to follow soon, including plans for discussion session following the film, and more opportunities to view the film through our partner institutions.

They then asked nine NIGMS early career investigators to tackle the most popular ones in short videos, which they featured on their social media. Now, you can watch the whole series on their YouTube channel.
