Purnell Museum's new exhibit takes a local look at past medical epidemics
Each month we hope to bring you a feature on one of our successful mini-grant applicants. This month meet the Julia A. Purnell Museum and their new exhibit they will be introducing this spring: Epidemic: A Local History of Medical Crisis.
The Julia A. Purnell Museum will create a new exhibition focusing on the history of historic medical epidemics through the lens of local experience. The museum houses a sizable collection of medical artifacts, ledgers, and documents from local practitioners dating from the early 1800s to the late 20th century. “Through these objects and documents as well as others borrowed from partner institutions and private collections, we can tell the story of important historic crises in medicine that changed the way people interacted with each other in ways that resonate with people experiencing the CoVid-19 crisis today,” says Museum Director, Dr. Cynthis Byrd. The exhibit will proceed chronologically to cover such topics as tuberculosis, smallpox, the Spanish flu, AIDS, and CoVid-19. This exhibit will be presented in the museum, but photographs and text will be shared online as well in order to reach a larger audience and allow for access by those who may not be able to visit in person due to health concerns. “We also anticipate that this project will be of particular interest to educators and homeschoolers who may not be able to schedule their usual field trips to the museum, so we welcome an opportunity to fill this gap,” Byrd adds.
The museum is located on Market Street in Snow Hill and is open year round. Visit the Purnell Museum.

2020 was a challenging year. It produced an unprecedented global pandemic that made the ongoing mission of the Beach to Bay Heritage Area more difficult than ever before. We were able to continue to offer our mini-grant program, and received grant funding to expand our projects and programs to reach a virtual tourism and economic development community.  Help preserve, protect, and promote the Lower Eastern Shore's cultural traditions, historic sites, and natural landscapes by becoming a member of the Beach to Bay Heritage Area! Stay connected to our exciting projects and programs, learn about funding opportunities and ways to get involved.
We are partnering with the Rural Maryland Council to create online virtual tours of our historic sites, attractions and museums in order to encourage folks to get back to visiting when the time is right.
We are partners with the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority to encourage and enable all of our heritage area stakeholders here on the shore to apply for capital improvement projects, whether it is façade improvements, building a new exhibit or creating handicap accessibility.
