29th January 2021

From the Headteacher

During this past week I have been reviewing student progress reports, and rewards data. I have been hugely encouraged by what I have seen. During this reports season - reports have gone home for Years 7-11 and 13 since January, with Year 12 to follow - teachers have awarded over 12,000 effort grades. 93% of those grades  were at the Academy's expected standard of "good" or "excellent" effort - a fantastic achievement.
At the same time, I discovered that almost 118,000 reward points have been issued this year so far. Despite this huge number, there are only 53 points between the top two houses in the current battle for the House Cup! 90 students have now reached the conduct points threshold for a Headteacher's Commendation, and 12 have received commendations from the Academy Trustees.

These incredible figures show that, despite these challenging times, our students are throwing themselves into their learning with all their customary effort, showing the Academy values of kindness, curiosity and determination, and doing their absolute best. In these times - and, indeed, at any time - that is all we could ask for.

I have provided a more detailed update on the "things we know now that we didn't know last week" in my Headteacher's Lockdown Update letter, which you can read on the Academy website or watch on YouTube
Stay safe everyone.

Headteacher's Blog: Green Shoots

In the bleakness of a seemingly never-ending January, locked down and learning remotely, it's easy to get dragged into negativity. That's why, this week, I have intentionally been looking out for the green shoots of early spring - and as many other reasons to be cheerful as I could find. In this week's blog, I list some of the green shoots I found after the weekend's snow had melted away. Click here to read the blog.

Year 9 Options Evening
Wednesday, 3rd February, 4pm-6pm

The Year 9 Option's Evening will take place next Wednesday. This is an important evening and provides you with an opportunity to discuss the subject specific content and assessment procedures of the GCSE options.

As part of our Covid-safe procedures we will be using the same online system as we used for the Year 9 Parents' Evening. You can book online, choose your own appointment times and will receive an email of confirmation.

You should have received an email with further information including the booking procedure. If you have not received this  please contact Zoe Clements.

We look forward to seeing you next week for these important discussions.
Mr Davies

Children's Mental Health Week

1st - 7th February
The theme for Children's Mental Health week is "Express Yourself."  In the spirit of self-expression we want to encourage our young people to communicate how they feel and to express their true identity.  Listen to some podcasts which explore the journey other people have been on: Connect with groups: Talk to someone who can help you express your feelings:
  • Childline – 08001111
  • Samaritans – 116 123
  • Young Minds – 85258
  • If it is an emergency – 999
This Video is really useful to help you think about mental health in simple terms.

World Book Day
Thursday, 4th March

To celebrate World Book Day the Library is launching 'The toilet roll challenge' to decorate a cardboard tube with a book, fairy tale or nursery rhyme character.  A chance for families, students and siblings to get creative. If you have any spare toilet roll or kitchen roll tubes please send them in to school if your children are attending our frontline provision. Take a picture of your tubes and email them to Mrs Dibble

FareShare

We are proud to have been able to support our families with FareShare parcels for the past four years.  We collect the food and toiletry donations on a Wednesday and distribute them to our families on a Thursday morning.  If there are any local organisations who have excess food, toiletries, household cleaning products etc, that they wish to donate to our cause please contact Mrs Mckay at the Academy to arrange collection/drop off.  Likewise if there are any families who wish for our support in these challenging times please contact us confidentially and we will respond.

The Annual Careers Convention – Part 1

Last night our first ever online Careers Convention went live! If you didn’t get a chance to ‘attend’, it will stay on our website for a few weeks so feel free to revisit all the education and training providers involved.  Just click on this link to take you to the online Careers Convention.  If you’ve found that the Careers Convention has left you with more questions to ask about potential career paths, you might find a visit to our new website page with recommended careers research resources useful.

A reminder that ‘The Careers Convention Part 2:  Employment’ will be coming up in Term 4, we hope you find that useful too.  You can also book a one-to-one careers interview with Ms McGonigal by emailing careers@churchill-academy.org or talking to your tutor.  We hope you enjoyed the event.  Thanks to Ms McGonigal, Mrs Franklin and Miss Clements for the work that went into organising the event.

'Visiting' speaker from the Bank of England

On Thursday despite the lockdown and the vagaries of technology,  we were delighted to welcome Malindi Myers who is the Bank of England's agent for the South West. With almost 50 Business and Economics 6th form students in attendance, Malindi gave a fascinating talk about her career path and the role of the Bank of England's agents in the formulation of monetary policy.   Of particular note was her encouragement of students to go for all opportunities as they arise and not to hold back for fear that they are not good enough.  A very thoughtful and inspiring address.
 Mrs Davey

Food & Nutrition

Once again Food & Nutrition students have been very busy cooking lots of different dishes.... ranging from macaroni cheese, brownies, burgers, scotch eggs and sometimes whatever students can find at home to cook with! Just amazing! We are so impressed with students efforts so far this term. Keep these dishes coming. As we have said, if you are unable to cook the dish that your teacher has set, be creative and cook something else!
Chosen dish this week: Eva Michelmore, Year 10, homemade scotch eggs. More delicious dishes on the website.

Options evening information for GCSE Food & Nutrition

We thought we would take the opportunity to give you some insight into our amazing subject, GCSE Food & Nutrition, please take a look at the video we have created, and we look forward to speaking to you soon during Options evening.
Please see our video here
Of course, if you have any questions that you would like to ask beforehand, please feel free to email foodtech@churchill-academy.org

Sixth Form Applications & Interviews

If you have sent in your application to us recently you will have received an email confirming we have received it over the last week. We will then be scheduling interviews over Terms 3 and 4.  Please do not worry if you don’t hear about your interview date quickly, there is a large number to process and it will take several months to interview all applicants.

Interviews in Term 3 will be conducted over Zoom. It would be normal for students to be excused from lessons for a Sixth Form interview during the school day so the same will apply with remote learning.  We hope that, by Term 4, we will be able to resume interviewing in the normal way.

We will be planning our curriculum option blocks around applications received by the end of Friday, 8th January. Whilst we cannot guarantee to provide all subject combinations, we aim to make sure that students who have applied by this deadline have the best chance of studying all the subjects they have chosen.

We are still accepting applications so if you have not yet applied, please use the Word application form and send it, when completed, to 6thform@churchill-academy.org.

Free School Meals

All families eligible for Free School Meals should have received an email about the voucher system which will be in place throughout this national lockdown. If you have any queries, please contact Stephanie Franklin at the Academy.

Update from Frontline: now at capacity

Frontline is our in-school provision for the children of critical workers and other eligible students. Our Frontline provision is now at capacity, so we are undertaking needs-based assessments for any new applicants and we are not able to offer any further full time places. Therefore we would urge families only to apply for places in Frontline if you meet the criteria and you cannot work without them.
To enquire about places in Frontline, please email Frontline@churchill-academy.org. Please remember that, even if you are eligible for a place, you are not entitled to one. Do not send students in to school unless you have a place confirmed.

Remote Learning

Students should continue to follow their normal timetable when learning from home. All students are expected to "attend" the lesson via the links provided by their teacher in Google Classroom. The "live" element may be a short introduction to the learning task, or may last longer, depending on the lesson content. Attendance and participation will be monitored closely every lesson as part of our daily engagement check, with any issues picked up by tutors in the weekly check-in.

Please see the website for details of our full remote learning offer and expectations

The Churchill Challenge!

The Churchill Challenge is now six weeks in, with 500 students and staff signed up and over 4,000 activities recorded. Collectively we’ve covered a whopping 29,000 kilometres - the equivalent of traveling from Churchill to Chile, then onto Tanzania via Timbuktu!  Lancaster still lead the pack with Windsor chasing them down, followed by Tudor, Stuart, Hanover and the 6th Form.

Keep on going - the challenge runs until 21st February!

Good luck!
