Diocesan guidelines for in-person gathering

January 31, 2020
This Sunday at St. Peter’s Church you will hear music composed and offered by American musicians. The prelude is by Charles Zeuner (1795-1857) who was actually born in Germany and emigrated to Boston where he served as organist for the Handel and Haydn Society and Park Street Church. He later moved to Philadelphia and worked as the organist for Arch Street Presbyterian Church. The music for our often-sung Glory to God in the highest was written by Robert Powell (b 1932) organist, conductor and prolific composer. He was Alec Wyton’s assistant at St. John the Divine in NYC and for 35 years served as organist and director of music for Christ Episcopal Church in Greenville, SC.

Apollo Appolito will sing Peace In The Valley by The Reverend Thomas A. Dorsey (1899-1993). He was born in Villa Rica, Georgia and went on to be known as the father of gospel music. His influence on the genre cannot be overstated. Take My Hand, Precious Lord is but one of his well-known songs. Peace In The Valley was written for Mahalia Jackson and was recorded by Elvis Presley, Tennessee Ernie Ford and Red Foley.

The postlude is a lively little piece by William Selby (1738-1798) who moved to Boston from England. For a while he was organist for Trinity Church in Newport, RI but later returned to Boston to serve as organist for King’s Chapel. He is remembered for organizing one of the first music festivals in the colonies. He was very much admired for his organ performances.

Banns of Marriage
Traditionally the way marriages have been announced in a Church of England and Episcopal Church parish, the publishing of banns is not used very often now. I like the connection to the past and I like it as a way to share good news about parishioners. Ricky Murphy and Laura Hammond, both St. Peter’s parishioners, will be married here in a small, family-only liturgy on February 5, 2021.

I publish the Banns of Marriage between Laura Brooks Hammond and Richard Eugene Murphy, both of Skidaway Island.  If any of you know just cause why they may not be joined together in Holy Matrimony, you are bidden to declare it. This is the second time of asking.
St. Peter's Lenten Devotional: We need you!
It's been quite a year! Now, take a few moments to share your experiences, your thoughts and your lessons. Then share your personal reflections with the rest of the Parish in our sixth Lenten booklet of daily devotionals. Pick a meaningful scripture if you wish or a special day between Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17, and Easter Sunday, April 4. We need your help. Recall a special experience or a special moment that you’d like to share.

Click here for a calendar of scripture readings.

Send your essay to Judy Kenney, Jim Toedtman, or Susanne Evangelista. The deadline is Monday, Feb. 1.
