Licensing update

The long road to regulation of Short Term Lets in Scotland has taken important steps forward recently.

Following the Scottish Governments latest consultation a report was published on 10 December 2020 which can be viewed by clicking here. You can read our response to the consultation on our website by clicking here.

On 14 December, the Licensing Order, Control Area Regulations and the Business and Regulatory Impact Assessment (BRIA)] were laid at the Scottish Parliament.

Subject to the approval of the Scottish Parliament, the Licensing Order and Control Area Regulations will come into force on 1 April 2021. Local authorities will have until 1 April 2022 to establish a licensing scheme and existing hosts will have until 1 April 2023 to apply for a licence.

However, in the meantime where you believe that a Short Term Let is operating in breach of planning permissions please report it to City of Edinburgh Council by clicking here.

Seafield stench and Seafield scream

While we await the start of the interim investment to improve Seafield, we are approaching the start of the smelly / noisy season, and it is vital that we all report every occurrence of smell or noise, so that Veolia and Scottish Water are kept on their toes.

Planning update

After a busy few months running up to the end of the year for the LLCC planning sub-group, the recent lull in activity has been welcome but is unlikely to last long. We await the outcomes of a number of local planning applications we have engaged with, and continue to keep an eye out for any new applications on our patch.

The rapid development of industrial sites running from Baltic St along Salamander St east towards Seafield remains a concern for a variety of reasons – does the area have the infrastructure and the amenity to cope with all this new housing? – and it shows no sign of slowing down.

£eith Chooses

£eith Chooses is the annual event when local people in Leith vote for four community projects they think should receive grant funding (up to £5,000 each) from the Council’s Community Grants Fund. This year Trams to Newhaven have ‘topped up’ the fund with an extra £5,000. There is £51,106 available altogether, and 26 projects applying. Not all projects can be successful. It is really important that as many as possible people vote, to get a fair and representative decision about which projects are judged most beneficial. Voting opens on 25thJanuary and closes on 31stJanuary 2021.www.leithchooses.net/projects
