BIKI NEWS: JANUARY 2021
You can expect more places to Biki in 2021 with the construction of several bikeway projects planned for urban Honolulu. Outlined in the 2019 Bike Plan Update, these projects will help create a transportation network that provides safer travel, promotes health, and creates stronger and more livable communities.

This map (courtesy of Honolulu Complete Streets) indicates the new bikeways planned for installation in the 2021 construction phase. Here are a few upcoming projects we're especially excited about:

Ward Avenue: Protected bike lanes will connect the existing bike infrastructure on King Street and Ala Moana Boulevard, providing another important mauka-to-makai bikeway. This project will have one-way bike lanes on both sides of the street, with cyclists riding in the same direction as motor vehicle traffic. The construction of this lane is part of a roadway repair project currently underway.

King Street Extension: The popular King Street Protected Bike Lane, completed in 2014, currently spans about two miles from Alapai Street to Isenberg Street. A planned half mile extension project will expand the two-way lane to Alakea Street, bringing cyclists straight into the heart of downtown.

Bishop Street: A two-way protected bike lane will be constructed on the Diamond Head side of the street between Beretania Street and Nimitz Highway.

DID YOU KNOW...

Hotel Street is designated as a bike route and only bikes and buses are permitted to use the Richards to River section. When riding on this street, keep in mind that buses will be making frequent stops.
CAN I RIDE ON THE SIDEWALK?
The short answer to this complicated question: Sometimes...
Bike Lane Riding
Sidewalk Riding
The City and County of Honolulu prohibits bicyclists from riding on sidewalks within business districts or where prohibited. In all other areas, bicycles may be ridden on sidewalks provided the speed is 10 mph or less. The bicyclist must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians, giving an audible signal before overtaking them. (Honolulu DTS)

We recommend looking for a route with existing bike infrastructure, so you don't have to choose between riding on a dangerous roadway or riding on the sidewalk where it may be prohibited (Waikiki, Ala Moana, Chinatown, etc.). And remember if you ever feel unsafe, just hop off your Biki and walk it to the nearest Biki Stop.

WHERE TO BIKI
Kakaako mural

Kakaako just got more colorful! A new mural, featuring a woman stringing a plumeria lei with her two children, was recently completed by local artist Kai'ili Kaulukui. Grab a bike, explore the neighborhood and see if you can find this new work of art.

"I'm staying in Waikiki during my visit to Oahu (I moved from Honolulu to LA in 2019) and didn't want the hassle and expense of parking a car here. I originally planned to get around by walking but saw how many Biki Stops were in Waikiki and liked the idea of getting around faster.

After my first ride, I remembered how much I love riding bikes! After months of barely leaving the house in Los Angeles, it's been great to get outdoors and use some different muscles. There is a unique sense of freedom when I Biki; it feels a little like i'm flying."
