Weekly Update - January 27
"Lydia of Thyatira" from Art in the Christian Tradition

Witnesses to the faith

Throughout the year, the Church commemorates saints and others who have lived out their faith and followed Jesus in visible and lasting ways. Commemorated today are Lydia, Dorcas, and Phoebe, witnesses to the faith.

"On this day the church remembers three women who were companions in Paul’s ministry. Lydia was Paul’s first convert at Philippi in Macedonia. She was a merchant of purple-dyed goods, and because purple dye was extremely expensive, it is likely that Lydia was a woman of some wealth. Lydia and her household were baptized by Paul, and for a time her home was a base for Paul’s missionary work. Dorcas is remembered for her charitable works, particularly making clothing for needy widows. Phoebe was a diakonos, a deaconess in the church at Cenchreae, near Corinth. Paul praises her as one who, through her service, looked after many people." (Copyright © 2021 Augsburg Fortress).

The stories of women are not prominent in Scripture. Of the women mentioned, many are unnamed, known instead by their family relationships or status. And yet, even from the small references we get, it is clear that generations of women told the story of God's love through their acts of service, proclamation of the gospel, and faithfulness to God's call.

Alongside Lydia, Dorcas, and Phoebe, we know lots of women who have been (and continue to be!) witnesses to the faith. Mothers and grandmothers and aunts, Sunday School teachers, camp counselors, and others - I'm sure that each of us could name many women who taught us about God, cared for the vulnerable, and gave generously of their time and resources in service to the gospel. Who might you lift up today?

With hope,
Pastor Kerri
