Hayhurst Garden Committee Update

The Hayhurst Garden Committee wishes you all a Happy New Year and is committed to maintaining and improving our garden, courtyard, and the general landscape of Hayhurst. This year we have plans to rebuild the garden beds, restore the plants in the sensory barrels, and begin phase 1 of our beautification project.
Our garden committee consists of parents and community members that share an interest and passion for plants, gardening, garden education, and maintaining our space. Our committee is always open to new members and we welcome you to join us! If you would like to become involved or become a garden committee member, please email Mike Patterson or Nadya Burchette.

Hayhurst Beautification Project: The Hayhurst Garden Committee has long held a vision to bring beauty to the front of our school by updating the landscape.

Our goals and some benefits for the re-landscaping of the school front include:

  • Create a more welcoming environment with the addition of tree, shrubs, flowers, and ornamental grasses to bring year-round color which will foster emotional well being
  • Add to the school’s opportunities for kids to learn about biodiversity and ecology
  • Create an environment of interest and perhaps wonder with informational signage that will include ecological and environmental purposes.
  • Expand our habitat for birds and pollinators
  • Lead by example front yard alternatives to lawns
  • Become a continuing source of community pride and a perhaps a place to gather and share

In order to be successful, we have created this project to be accomplished in several phases over the next few years.  We are pleased to announce that phase 1 has begun with site preparation and design planning. We currently have funding to begin phase 1 and will be adding some trees and plants over the next 12 months. As our project develops we will need more school and community support with both volunteerism and finances. The attachments show the project areas for the 3 phases and we will keep you updated on progress and future needs.

Introducing our New Husky Mascot!

HUSCULES!
Thanks kids for all your great suggestions of what to name our new mascot on the Friends of Hayhurst Elementary Facebook page.
Now we need your help to find Huscules all over the neighborhood!
If you spot Huscules on your neighborhood walks, have your parent take a pic and post a hint about the mascot's location on the Facebook page so others can spot Huscules, too.  If Huscules lands at your house, or in your garden, take good care of Huscules for a few days and then pass Huscules on to another Hayhurst family.  But SHHH… don’t tell us exactly where Huscules is… it’s just for fun to keep looking to find Huscules and get us all out of the house this winter!

Working Towards Anti-Racism as a Family Parent Night On Feb. 9, 7-8:30 PM

The Jackson and Gray Middle School PTAs welcome you to participate in a special parent night, hosted by the Anti Defamation League Education Director, Scotland Nash EdD, for a workshop series for families and communities to reflect on bias, engagement, and communication.

Learn about the manifestation of bias, reflect on life experiences, consider the lenses that we bring to difficult conversations, and how understanding bias supports building a connection. In this workshop, we will understand how it is possible to challenge bias, prejudicial thinking, and attitudes in ourselves. Through this “unlearning” of bias and the conscious effort it takes, that will support building allyship

Current issues provide a great opportunity to engage others in rich conversation, share important values, encourage a deeper understanding of the news, and disrupt bias and prejudice.

Food Bag Program - Paper bags needed!

The food bag program has an ongoing need for paper grocery bags.

Bags can be dropped off on the porch at 6453 SW Loop Drive

Thank you!

Are you a Safeway or Albertsons employee?
Or, an Alpha Gamma Delta member?

As you may be aware, local PTAs are currently providing families at Hayhurst, Odyssey, Ainsworth, and Robert Gray Middle School with biweekly food bags. The Food Bag Program is looking to apply for some grants to supplement and bolster our funding. Some grants have specific requirements that someone in our group be connected with their business or organization.

We are looking for anyone who is a Safeway/Albertsons employee or an Alpha Gamma Delta member who can be listed as a sponsor for the grant. We have grant writers - just looking for a sponsor! Additionally, if you have any leads on food grants, we’d love to hear from you.

Please contact Rachel Dvorsky.
