Islam and the Abolition of Slavery
With Dr Sara Saigol and Dr Rizwan Syed

Weds 20th January, 8pm

All countries have banned slavery and the world is a better place for it.

But for over 1000 years and since the very beginning, Islam and Slavery seemed inseparable and scholars opposed its abolition.

Join us on an intriguing journey through Europe, Africa and Asia to discover how the Islamic world came to abolish slavery.

What role did Christianity and Britain play in this?

Regarding slavery, how did Islamic Law and Ethics diverge, and why did this happen?

Finding positive and appropriate content online for our youngsters is challenging. With our busier lives, many parents allow their children to entertain themselves through channels such as YouTube, however asking our youngsters to watch Islamic content seems like a chore! The Young Muslims aim to nurture our youngsters to produce positive Islamic content for the benefit of mankind, inshaAllah!
A competition was launched in which youngsters were invited to produce a short film about a Hadith or an Islamic story. We had a total of 16 entries, which were all showcased via Zoom on Saturday the 9th of January 2021.
Four independent judges graded the entries with audience participation, and two of the entries were so close that the winner had to be chosen through a final audience vote! Alhamdulillah, the winning entry won a whopping £500.00, with just two votes between the finalists. Please watch the amazing winning video using this link.

ISB Updates
Membership Survey
Since its foundation in 1990, ISB has been developing the leaders of tomorrow and engaging Muslims and wider society, built on a foundation of Islamic values.  We have organised a wide range of activities over the years to nurture the young and build the foundations of an outward looking organisation.  As with any organisation with longevity it is essential that ISB stays relevant and is engaged in work that is important and may be unique.  The coming generation are growing up in a hugely different social, economic, and cultural environment. The rapid growth of social media has channeled their attention into other activities including how they consume information. We need your help to move our organisation forward.

We are going to conduct an extensive survey of our current and past members and anyone who has participated in our activities or events over previous years.

The purpose of this survey is twofold. We would like to understand how we can serve you better. Secondly, the hallmark of ISB has so often been the contribution our members make through their volunteering. We would like to understand your skills and experience as there is so much talent and wisdom that our projects (new and existing) could benefit from.

We shall be sending out a separate email with a link to the online questionnaire which should take about 10 minutes to complete. In addition, we plan to run a series of online mixed aged focus group sessions during February and March 2021 to help develop some of the ideas.
Please complete the survey here
Conversion to CIO structure
At the AMM the members unanimously approved the conversion of the Islamic Society of Britain from a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation Association model. This will simplify the administration for the organisation and will only require us to comply with the rules of the Charity Commission. The Association model structure still provides the same level of protection for the Trustees and maintains the voting membership in the governance of the charity and provides a layer of internal scrutiny and accountability over the Shura.

We plan to begin the process of applying to the Charity Commission to convert to the CIO Association model from January 2021. This is expected to take at least 4 months to complete. On its conclusion, the current Shura members will resign from the existing structure and transfer to the CIO.
New ISB Website developments
Work has now begun on developing a new ISB website which will provide new features not previously offered. This will include a secure membership area, podcast, and a gallery of pictures. A cross functional project team with members from across ISB is currently working to deliver this in Q1 2021.

We are also developing a new educational website which enable us to publish a variety of self-paced learning modules from our rich library of e-circle and masterclass recordings. These will be available to all our members for free. We hope to Go Live in early 2021.
ISB Branches Update
Manchester Branch

Raising greater awareness of COVID-19 vaccines across BAME communities in Manchester.

ISB Manchester is collaborating with Trafford Metropolitan Council in Greater Manchester and a number of local health and faith-based charities to raise awareness of the new COVID-19 vaccines. There is much misinformation circulating and reluctance amongst sections of the BAME community to be vaccinated. We shall be using a range of resources including short videos to send messages through a wide range of social media channels. We shall also be recruiting volunteers to support the vaccination programme in Manchester.
Helping the homeless and most vulnerable in Manchester. ISB Manchester Outreach Project.

Alhamdulillah, ISB Manchester are now providing meals to local shelters 3 times a week.

ISB volunteers have been busy throughout the months of October, November, December and January preparing hot meals for the service users at the Wellspring Centre. As well as providing hot meals, volunteers donated items to be packed into gift bags to donate to the service users on Christmas Day.

The service users greatly appreciate the hot meals and donations of snacks and drinks that they receive from us every Saturday. Especially during the unprecedented times we are currently facing, the meals provided every Saturday may be the only hot meal received.

ISB Manchester also prepare meals for a Women’s Shelter as well as a home for young people.

These are the words of one of our 13 year old volunteers:
“Sadaqah wipes out sins like water extinguishes fire.
The Prophet ( PBUH) said: “ The charity you give will be your shade on the Day of Judgement. When I help my mum make food, I believe that I need the reward more, than the people who need the money. When we give charity, be thankful to the people who we are giving to. We may be helping them in this world but they are helping us for akhirah.”
Meeshiam Fatima 13

And these are the words of one of our 11 year old volunteers:
“I think I should not be helping others with the thought to gain any rewards, to me it sounds selfish but I should be doing it for the pleasure of helping others who are in need and to please Allah SWT. When I saw my cake being distributed to the needy, it made me very happy and it was very rewarding to watch. I made little hearts on the cakes with icing, thinking whoever it may go to it would bring hope and joy to them and the thought that someone prepared these for them with all their heart.”
Izyaan Farhan 11

The Campus North team also got involved with this Project:
Assalamualaikum,
My name is Mariyah Aseri and I am a 4th year dental student and the Regional Lead for Campus North. On Thursday 24th December myself and a fellow Campus student, Maryam Zafar, delivered 15 care packages to Copperdale House. This volunteering project was co-ordinated by Auntie Azra Khan from ISB Manchester, and she supported us throughout the process.

A few days earlier, we brainstormed the items we could include in the gift bags, such as socks, hygiene products and snacks, which we were then able to purchase thanks to kind donations towards the project. When assembling the gift bags, Maryam’s sister Maheen joined us and we formed a little 'conveyor belt’. Maheen and I folded and tied bows on the socks, Maryam did some neat lettering on the gift bags and wrote a nice holiday message from ISB, and we all assembled the items in the care packages ready to send off.
When delivering the gift bags, we met with Anne and Terry from Copperdale House, who were so welcoming and lovely and their home looked like a warm and inviting place for all! They explained that many young people experiencing homelessness are provided shelter at the house, and Anne and Terry look after them. Their hard work was so touching to see, and it was such a rewarding opportunity to be able to brighten someone’s day, especially in the festive period which can be a tricky time for some. We hope lots more Campus students can help support the lovely couple in their future endeavours!
A special thank you to Auntie Azra who leads a lot of charitable projects within the community MashaAllah, and hopefully we can extend these volunteering opportunities to Campus students InshaAllah so keep an eye out! If you would like to find out more about volunteering with ISB, or would like to make a donation towards some of the projects we are working on, feel free to get in touch by sending us an email on campus@isb.org.uk.
JazakAllah for your continued support.
Supporting the elderly in care homes in Manchester. Golden Threads Project
ISB Manchester launched a project in the early part of the COVID-19 pandemic to help entertain and stimulate the elderly residents at Allingham house care home. Since the recent lockdown, this has become even more important as the residents have been isolated with little outside interaction as care homes have had to shut to outside visitors including family visits.
Our young volunteers have been entertaining the residents online every month with quizzes, jokes, poems and much more. The feedback has been amazing, and they are now seeking to expand this project to more care homes in the coming months. Volunteers who have delivered over 6 sessions have received a Golden Threads certificate of Achievement in recognition of their contribution.

They need more volunteers for their projects. If you are interested to join their team, please email manchester@isb.org.uk
