How are entrepreneurs applying regenerative and circular principles in Africa?
Footprints Africa has launched the first-ever comprehensive mapping of circular economy initiatives in Africa. The report is based on submissions from over 60 initiatives across the continent, featuring six themes of emerging business practices: Bio-waste to compost, construction, textiles and fashion, bio-waste to feed, e-waste and plastics. It tells the stories of the entrepreneurs who are reimagining Africa’s future through their business innovations. It is the first step in a journey to collect and map 500 cases. We are happy to accompany Footprints Africa on this journey, alongside the African Circular Economy Network, Shifting Paradigms and GRID-Arendal.

The framework includes 80 tangible strategies that provide guidance and inspiration for making products circular. These are wide-ranging: design guidance, decisions concerning inputs, use, and end-of-life, business models and collaboration in the supply chain and in the use of digital technologies to support circularity.

New project
Coalition Circular Accounting (CCA) and the Impact Institute partner to assess the circular impact of Dutch recycling company Meerlanden
As Meerlanden aims to make the Netherlands residual waste-free, the recycling company needs to measure and report its current circular impact to steer action for the future. Meerlanden therefore joins the next trajectory of the Coalition Circular Accounting (CCA) together with the Impact Institute to assess the financial, environmental, societal and human impact of a selected resource stream: vegetable, fruit and garden waste. Developing circular solutions for this resource flow will enable the company to scale up identified methods to their complete portfolio in the future. The collaboration will provide important insights into how impact data can be integrated into financial reporting, business strategy and practices. Stay tuned for more information!

Interview: Renting or buying second hand clothing as a sustainable option
Rental and resale of second-hand clothing via on- and offline channels has become more popular among millenials and Gen Z—especially since the corona pandemic. At the same time, unreliable supply chains and dramatically decreased sales figures makes the move to a more sustainable business model trending in the fashion industry. In the past months, and with the support of PwC, our Switching gear program has worked closely with fashion brands and retailers to help them navigate their circular journey. In this interview, PwC experts Jennifer Nelen and Amber Voets discuss recent trends & developments on this topic together with experts from ASKET, ETP, Lindex, Kuyichi Pure Goods and Circle Economy.
