Well, it’s official: 2020 has tied with 2016 as the hottest year on record. Bloomberg delved a little deeper behind that figure, including this annotated month-by-month breakdown:

The explanation of what one degree means on a global scale is another highlight:

“A difference so slight it would have no bearing on your decision to wear a coat in the morning—more than 1°C above the 20th century average—ends up having far-reaching climate consequences.”

Diving into statistics

Economist and journalist Tim Harford recently published the book How to make the world add up: Ten rules for thinking differently about numbers. It’s a real love song to statistics, showing how using numbers (properly) can lead to unparallelled insights. Harford dives into the same ideas in this podcast episode

Another ode to statistics comes in the form of this visual and interactive guide to probability, from Brown University, starting with basic and compound probability, and going on to cover probability distributions, frequentist and Bayesian inferences, and regression analysis.

Awards, awards, awards

The Pudding has announced the winners of its Pudding Cup 2020, from a visual analysis of Ben and Jerry’s flavours to an explainer digging into the why of a covid-19 tracing app.

There’s also some great stuff in the honourable mentions, including Karim Douïeb’s by now classic problematization of electoral maps.
It’s also high time to apply for the Sigma Awards. The award, now in its second year, “celebrates the best in data journalism”. Applications are open until 1 February.
