The Weekly E-newsletter of St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church

Message from the Priest-in-Charge

Dear friends,

We are now in the season after Epiphany known as Ordinary Time. Our church hangings are green to represent life and growth, and we hear the Gospel stories about the growth of Jesus' ministry, both in numbers and in geographic area.

The word "ordinary" in this season doesn't mean "usual" or "plain." It comes from the use of ordinal numbers, which are numbers that show sequence, like "first," "second," "third," and so on (as opposed to cardinal numbers like "one," "two," "three," etc.). We count the Sundays in Ordinary Time by using ordinal numbers, like "the third Sunday after Epiphany." We continue this practice until Ash Wednesday, which falls on February 17 this year.

We keep track of the calendar in this unusual way for a reason: every week, this calendar system points back to a major event as a reminder that our lives are changed. For example, by counting the weeks after Epiphany, we are reminded weekly of Epiphany and story of the wise men visiting Jesus. This story shows us that Jesus came to be the Messiah of the whole world, not just of one people or nation. And so in this season after Epiphany, we are reminded to live out that universal nature of Christ's love, which is meant for the whole world.

We hope you can join us for worship this weekend:

  • Saturday at 5:00 pm - Contemporary worship with singing
  • Sunday at 8:00 am - Traditional spoken service
  • Sunday at 10:30 am - Contemporary worship with singing

We are also offering two worship services during the week:

Both of these weekday services will be streamed on our church Facebook Live page.

Be well, and look for opportunities to share the love of Jesus with all people, regardless of barriers.

In Christ's lov
e,

Andrew+

The Annual Meeting of the parish, an important meeting where the congregation elects Vestry members and Delegates to Diocesan Convention, is held "the last Sunday of January each year," by church law. This year, it will look a bit different, but it will still be held!
