Abalone Patrol

Abalone Patrol is on this Saturday 23 January 2021

We need and are looking for as many volunteers as we can get to help out this weekend so if you can help please come down on Saturday.
Please meet in the boat shed at 6am to get everything ready and then walk down to our positions. It finishes at 8am. You will get hours and experience for this.

Thank you to everyone that comes down and supports the club.
Water Safety for Australia Day Swim at Sorrento Beach

We require water safety for the Swimming WA Swim that is at Sorrento Beach. We do this every year and it raises alot of money for our club.
If you have some spare hours on Australia day morning please help us out.

You can be SRC or bronze/higher

Please meet in the front of the boat shed for 6:30am. You do not have to stay the whole time, just do what you can, races are finishing about 12pm, just let the captain on the day know how long you can stay for.

Thank you so much to everyone that helps out!

Any questions, please let Jess know on admin@sorrentoslsc.org.au
McDonald’s Patrol - Sunday

I would like to thank McDonald’s patrol for staying until 7 pm on Sunday afternoon looking for the lost child. Your commitment and high level of professionalism provided during the search and working alone side the police was brilliant. Well done team.

If anyone would like to talk to one of the club's peer support please contact Jess at the office.

Youth

Sunday Session: Superb weather and a great (extended) club swim what more could you ask for. Thanks for lengthening the swim Lisa 😉. All in prep for the Mile Swim of course. Great effort by all! 7 of the then Youth split off with Chris and mentors to tackle the strong easterlies on the ski’s and 26 youth ran through Signals, discussed patrol experiences and rotated through three Person Board Rescues; followed by a flags or board / swim session. Thanks team that was a solid 2 ½ hr session!

To all the beachies that are keen to work on sprints for Sunday Sessions please try getting your club mates along to help form relay teams. We have a couple of good comps that are coming up and it would be great to get teams together for the sprint relays.

Next Weeks Youth Sunday Session, Sorrento: 24th Jan will be run by Lisa. Club swim will still be on as will the normal Sunday Session. We hope that those not able to make the country carnival still come down and have fun and challenge yourself. See you at the youth flag!!

Mandurah Carnival Recap: Sat 16th Jan:
Great to see a 10 Sorrento U12 – U14’s turning up for the inaugural Mandurah Carnival. Flat super clear water conditions. A good showing from other Metro clubs mixed youth age groups made it a fun but very competitive day. While we didn’t have any U15-U19 Youth there, the U14’s did us proud. Great job Lani, Bronte, Emily, Zahra and Jett. We will be back again the location was great and the Mandurah club did a fantastic job running the event.

Upcoming Events:
Sat/Sun: Jan 23/24 – Bunbury Country Carnival!! Always a great time and with a big contingent of Youth going this should be a fantastic weekend!
Mile Swim: 30th Jan (SAT) – We hope to see as many Youth as possible take this on. Buddy up and pace yourself. Everyone that does squad training should be challenging themselves on this 😊 and it’s a great club friendly event
The Sorrento R&R Superstars have 3 Comps in quick succession: 20th Feb (Sat), 6th Mar (Sat), 20th Mar (Sat) – All at Sorrento Beach and a great chance to spectate and see how champs perform.
Our next Senior / Youth interclub carnival is on 21st Feb, Mullaloo Beach – more to come on this.

Have a great week Youth, and sadly for some the last full week of school holidays!! We look forward to catching up on the sand either in Bunbury or Sorrento this Sunday 😊.

Youth Committee

Youth Beginner Surf Ski Lesson Program for this year has now finished with around 15 youth attending lessons.

The coaches have been impressed with the enthusiasm and skill shown by the youth – particularly in the last 2 lessons that have been run on the ocean.

Attendees are now invited to join the Sunday morning surf ski development squad as a pathway to eventually join the senior squad.

A massive thank you to our coaches Les and Leanne who have run the Saturday morning sessions (adding to an already heavy coaching load).

Thanks also to our magnificent ski fraternity that provided mentors to help in the sessions – I know that I will forget a few so apologies in advance, but some of the mentors include Kevin, James, Dave, Rita, Christine, Sue, Jeff, Maddie, Tim, Ben, Richard and Jason.

The parents of the youth were fantastic in their involvement with loading skis onto trailers, towing trailer to the marina, guiding youth in cleaning and packing away skis – a great group of parents!

Senior Boards

The Club has been working on a suitable approach for ensuring that members who  do not have their own Board and require use of a Club Board for training and competition purposes can access  a suitable one.
Following consideration of a number of different approaches, the Club has decided to implement a Board Usage Agreement, where athletes who regularly train and compete and do not have their own board, may apply for use of  a dedicated club board for the season. Once approved by the Club, these athletes will be allocated dedicated Boards for the season and secured with  the Athlete's own lock.  The agreement requires a  deposit of $300 to be lodged, to be returned subject to the board been returned in a satisfactory condition.   Athletes are expected to treat the Boards with appropriate care and attention, as well as notifying the Club in the event that a board is damaged so that  it can be assessed and repaired.

Athletes with personal Boards  are expected to use their own boards  for training and competition.  In the event that  a personal board is damaged and a Club one is required for training/competition while repairs talk place, Athletes should engage with the coaching staff/ competition director/board captain,  regarding accessing a suitable club board in the interim.

As indicated, Club allocated Boards are expected to be secured with the Athletes own personal lock.  Other Club Board (excluding those used by Youth) will be locked.  Board captain/Coaches will have access to these boards and can allocate them out  for individual sessions at their discretion.

The Youth Boards will remain accessible for those who require access to a Board for training.   Again, athletes are expected to treat these with appropriate care and attention and notify the coaches in the event that there is damage to a board so  that  is can be assessed and repaired.

Requests for the allocation of a dedicated club board/ or any questions should be directed to the Competition Director at
competitiondirector@sorrentoslsc.org.au or you can call on 0413 626937

Woodside Nippers

Wow how great was it to get a beautiful Sunday morning for Nippers! It was Sorrento beach at its best and what better way to take advantage of the perfect conditions than to run round 2 if our Club Championships.

Thank you to our ever-reliable beach boys Ron, Jeff, Bob, Malcolm and John along with our sprint track set up crew the Belly’s, Duffy’s, and Jezza. Also a big thanks for the setup of arena set up Declan and Richard.

Well done to all our Nippers that had a crack on Sunday especially the ones that pushed themselves a bit more than usual. I’ve been given plenty of positive feedback from Age Managers that lots of our Nippers competed in events they wouldn’t normally do which is awesome to hear.

Congratulations to all our little nippers who had a go at the Cottesloe carnival in perfect conditions. We had a great team of green at the carnival. Super job everyone that attended.

Thank you to Mathew Thompson for towing the board trailer and to our awesome age managers who coordinate and organize our teams at carnivals.

This weekend we have a huge team heading down to the country carnival at Bunbury SLSC.  Good luck and safe travels to all our families and our nippers at the carnival.

Have a great weekend and I look forward to watching our Mighty Sorrento athletes compete at Bunbury.

With so many of our Junior setup volunteers heading to Bunbury this weekend we will not have BBQ available at the club.

Our Under 6 pink caps will not be having a Nippers session on Sunday but all other age groups will be holding a session. Thank you to the Assistant Age managers that have put their hands up to take groups for the Sunday morning session.

See you on the beach!

Junior Director
