Warning southerly swells on entire coast
A low over the southern Tasman and its associated cold front is bringing a southerly change to the coast Tuesday. Conditions start to ease on Wednesday as the front moves away and the high currently near the Great Australian Bight drifts across southeast Australia, BUT a large southerly swell is expected for a few days.

Warnings have already started on Tuesday for large and powerful surf conditions that are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as crossing bars by boat and rock fishing. This will continue during Wednesday and Thursday, with seas on all parts of the coast of 1 to 3 metres plus southerly swells of 3 to 4.5 metres. Swell period on Tuesday is up around 18 seconds but shortening to around 12 seconds for following days.

Check local forecasts on the BOM website at http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/forecasts/map.shtml

Always tell someone where you are going and when you plan on coming back. If the rock platform is wet ask yourself 'why is it wet?' then watch the ocean for waves and swells for at least 20 minutes. Always fish with a friend, wear proper rockfishing footwear, light warm high-visibility clothing, and wear a life jacket in case you get washed in. Never turn your back on the ocean.

Also check out the links and safety advice on BOM's dedicated rock-fishing weather page.

Whenever you fish

  • choose a safe spot
  • don't fish alone
  • wear non-slip shoes
  • wear a life jacket
  • never turn your back on the sea.
