Bikeability on offer in schools supporting key workers

Avanti Cycling is offering Bikeability to schools which are still open for the children of key workers.

The one- and two-day courses are available under strict Covid-19 guidelines, including rules on equipment and smaller teaching groups.

Greg Woodford, director of Avanti Cycling, says: “Bikeability for the children who are at school will benefit the schools as it removes some of the pupils from class and helps social distancing.

“Cycle training takes place outdoors and therefore doesn’t carry the same risks of infection as many other activities.

“Like the Bikeability Trust, we believe that cycle training is a core part of the recovery curriculum,” Greg says.

We’re all set for when schools re-open

When schools revert to (semi) normal after the current lockdown, Avanti Cycling will be ready to pick up scheduled courses again.

“We’re planning to hit the ground running,” says Greg.

“We would like all our existing schools to pick up the same schedules which they’ve had over the past few years and we’ll work with our new schools to find mutually convenient slots,” he says.

Teachers have commented that Bikeability has provided children with many benefits during the pandemic, including good physical activity, increased confidence and a valuable distraction from the pressures of restrictions.

All courses have been adjusted to adapt to the Covid-19 restrictions.

Roll up for new cycling clubs for juniors

If you’ve been looking for fun cycling activities for children between 7 and 16, you’re in luck.

Avanti Freewheelers Community Cycling Clubs are clubs for juniors who want to have fun on their cycles, who want to learn to ride, want to improve their riding skills, maybe try a new cycling discipline or who want to take their riding to a new and exciting level.

It’s all about having fun adventures and developing new skills under the guidance of qualified coaches, instructors and guides Your club is a great place to meet your friends and make new ones whilst developing and refining skills that will last a lifetime.

It’s local too and we’ve an active club based in Reading and new ones coming soon to Didcot, Oxford and Milton Keynes.

Our main focus is those aged 12 to 16 but we’ll also be running events for the younger rider ages 7 to 11 and there will be family orientated events too, and especially for the younger riders not just cycling related. Face painting anyone?

Introducing Vanessa, our new administrator

Vanessa Hine recently joined us as an administrator and a key contact for schools.Vanessa says: “As a twenty-something who hadn't ridden a bike in a decade (and had only previously ridden in country parks), I embarked on a cycle tour around Paris, ending with a hair-raising trip around the Arc de Triomphe. It became clear then the value in learning some basic road safety, for me and other road users. So when offered the opportunity to work with schools to administer just such training, I jumped at the chance!”
