Ryan's book suggestion

"bringing our story back to life..."

Mid-January 2021 eNews

As we move together into the uncertainty of a new year, a few things are certain:  1) you brought us successfully through a most unpromising year,  2) sometimes the tortoise wins (see "Certo") 3) the Book Store is operating well and 4) Ryan has a suggestion for you!

New COVID-19 Restrictions
are Now in Place

With the new lockdown measures in place, what little action was taking place at the CMF Cottage has stopped almost completely. Unfortunately we have had to send our student, Ryan, home.

However, we will continue to:

  • Monitor the phone and respond to messages
  • Take email orders at the Book Store and Gift Shop - fulfilment times uncertain
  • Pick up mail as it is forwarded from the Post Office
  • Meet as necessary by Zoom or other distance means - Board and Committees and Exhibit Team
  • Update our website to reflect any further changes

So while we are very restricted, we are not completely shut down! And the support of our members and friends, as well as our governments, has meant that 2020 was not the disaster it might have been. We look forward to the time when we can fully reopen and wish you all the best, particularly the front line workers, as we fight this common and invisible enemy.

Northumberland County Archives
and Museum

NCAM Site PlanWith the start of work on the new Golden Plough Lodge, the County is significantly closer to the opening of a new facility for the Northumberland County Archives and Museum. They have exciting plans underway for annual exhibits projected to start in June of 2023. NCAM is committed to developing community-centric exhibitions and we look forward to working with them.

In addition to exhibits inside the new building, there will be permanent outdoor heritage interpretive stops along the landscaped public pathways. These will be designed to reveal the intriguing historical events that have occurred on the site as well as convey the natural ecology of the region. In spite of everything, these are exciting times!  (Photo: Cobourg News Blog)

The Certo Building Saga

Certo Building January 2021

It is good to see work proceeding on the restoration of the Certo building on the old Kraft property. As long ago as July, 2011 the Northumberland News was reporting the Town's intent to designate the building located at 520 William St. and fronting on Ontario Street. The site was described as "a property of cultural heritage value and interest".  When the owner applied for a demolition permit for a “red brick building that has a neo-classic front with six pillars” on the site where he planned to house six to 12 businesses, Cobourg took the first step in the designation process

Some six years later John Draper reported that “the owner was given an ‘Order to Remedy’ by Cobourg’s Chief Building Official... so he hired Pichler Engineering to prepare a structural review and assessment.” The report basically said that the 1500 square foot building was not worth fixing - repairs would cost around $500,000. At that point, Diane Chin, President of the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario, Cobourg Branch, asked that the permit be denied.

And here we are today with the restoration underway. Amazing! Does anyone out there know what it will be used for?

Ryan Recommends

RyanRecently I've been reading excerpts from "Who Killed Canadian History" by J.L. Granatstein. It's a short but powerful dissection of Canadian History and, more specifically, how it's taught within our educational institutions. Like anyone, I've always yearned to have an understanding and sense of pride for my country's historical legacy/mythology. However, speaking from personal experience, I never felt as though my time in school ever satisfied that craving. This book shows that this shouldn't be the case, nor does it need to be the case for us Canadians who want to truly appreciate our heritage. I recommend it.

We have one copy of that book available as well as many other quality history books. Here is the link to the Museum Book Store.  LINK.
