Director's note

How can we improve?

The Bjerknes administration has started the tedious work of collecting all the materials we need for our annual report. For the first time in history, we will have an online version only, but the quality will be as high as before. Please answer email requests promptly, as it will save time for all of us. You will be haunted until you answer.

Web of Science has registered 241 Bjerknes publications in 2020, exactly the same number as last year. There should have been more, but it too often happens that the Bjerknes name is forgotten when papers are submitted. So please remember to take part in the branding of our centre. We can congratulate Kerim Nisancioglu, Yongqi Gao, Vigdis Vandvik, Chuncheng Guo and Jürg Schwinger who all had ten publications or more last year.

We can always improve, as individuals and as a centre. To kick start discussions on how to best use our funding for the upcoming five years, you have all been invited to take part in a survey about what you like and dislike with the way we are organised and spend funding (email from Gudrun). The results will feed into discussions in the research teams, leader group and board, so please give us your advice on how we can improve.

Last year there were 11 PhD defences at the Bjerknes Centre. First out this year was Leonidas Tsopouridis, who few hours ago defended his thesis on the influence of sea surface temperatures on cyclones in the Gulf Stream and Kuroshio regions. Besides his PhD work, Leonidas has been an excellent representative for the early career scientists at the Centre, both by leading the PhD forum but also for representing the PhD students in the leader group. A big applause to Leonidas.
With the risks of repeating myself: It is a perfect winter weather, with excellent skiing conditions and mostly sunshine for another 10 days. I hope you find some time to enjoy it despite the fast-approaching February call from the Research Council.

PhD defense: Leonidas Tsopouridis
Today Leonidas has successfully, via Zoom, defended his PhD thesis entitled "On the Influence of Sea Surface Temperatures on Cyclone Characteristics in the Gulf Stream and Kuroshio Region".

Many congratulations from all of us at the Bjerknes Centre!

Survey for the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research
Dear all,

As our governmental funding has been extended until 2026, the BCCR leader group will set up a new strategy for the coming years.

We invite you all to answer an anonymised survey on the organization and how we spend our funding. Estimated time is 10-20 minutes, depending on the comment sections.

Your feedback is very important!

Please find the survey here

The Bjerknes PhD Forum
The Bjerknes PhD Forum is open for all PhDs affiliated with the Bjerknes Centre.
The Forum intends to create a community for international and Norwegian PhD students from different research areas during their time in Bergen.
Our aim is to facilitate exchange among new and advanced PhD students as well as to distribute and preserve knowledge about “the way things work”.
We meet about once a month to network and discuss different aspects of the academic career and/or life in Bergen. Visiting PhD students and interns are welcome to join our activities.

The current PhD Forum Board members are:

Sonja Wahl (leader) – Sonja.wahl@uib.no
Maaike Zwier (co-leader) - maaike.zwier@uib.no
Elina Efstathiou (contact person for new PhDs) - Evangelia.Efstathiou@uib.no

Keeping up the spirit!
Although we haven’t been as active as we usually are, the PhD Forum organized some events in 2020 to offer a place for (digital) social interaction.
We met outside for a guided tour of mushroom picking, played games online, had a course on body language and celebrated the end of the year with a julebord. (Picture Credit: Elina and Sonja)

Besides social networking, we will discuss “proposal writing and funding options” in the upcoming PhD Forum meetings.

BCCR/GFI seminars
Hey all,

the BCCR seminar is looking for speakers for the upcoming weeks! As of
now, there are no scheduled talks. We would again aim for Mondays 14:15
- 15:30, but as the seminar will still be online, we are of course
flexible. So please feel free to fill out the seminar form
(https://skjemaker.app.uib.no/view.php?id=2969462) if you want to share
your research with our community.

In order to fully utilize the "potential" that the current
online-situation provides us with, we would again like to welcome
speakers from outside our institutes to give a talk. So if you know a
colleague whose work and expertise are of interest to our center, feel
free to advertise our seminar to them.

In case of questions just contact us:
laura.dietrich@uib.no
marvin.kahnert@uib.no

All the best,
Laura and Marvin
