  January 2021

The Center for Educational Excellence (CEE) is pleased to share several upcoming initiatives as we begin the Spring 2021 semester. Click here to see the Spring 2021 CEE Highlights!

HyFlex Questions & Answers

With HyFlex 2.0 for Spring 2021, how are students expected to attend face-to-face classes?

In face-to-face courses, students are expected to attend either face-to-face or online (via Zoom links provided in Canvas) at the assigned course time (synchronously). This is a change from Fall 2020. Students who need to attend asynchronously due to special circumstances will require special permission from the instructor.

How will my students know when to attend face-to-face and when to attend online?

Prior to the first class day, make sure to let your students know which class days they are to attend class face-to-face. Locate room capacity numbers here

How will the class recordings work within Canvas?

Each Zoom meeting will be automatically recorded once launched from the Canvas links. Course recordings will be available to faculty once the class meeting concludes, but students will not have access unless granted by the instructor. See instructions regarding how to grant students access to course recordings here

Are there privacy concerns with the class recordings?

Class recordings can only be shared with the students (if circumstances require) enrolled in that course to maintain students’ privacy as required by FERPA.

How will classroom technology work?

Instructors will need to use lapel microphones and the pan-tilt-Zoom cameras to project to students who attend online. See instructions for using the classroom technology here. We advise instructors to visit their classrooms and test out the classroom technology prior to the first day.

What should I expect of my students?

Students are required to complete training through Canvas prior to attending class.  When attending class face-to-face, students are required to wear face coverings and should sit in seats that have been designated as available in classrooms. Faculty should take attendance in each face-to-face course meeting for contact tracing purposes.

Are there resources or training available to help?

Be sure to read through the faculty HyFlex handbook and encourage your students to consult the student HyFlex handbook. See the CEE calendar for upcoming training related to HyFlex and all other CEE events.

Who can I contact for help if needed?

CEE is here to help! Contact hyflex@tarleton.edu for immediate needs as well as your college instructional designer (see below for contact info) or college HyFlex ambassador

Updates from the CEE Team

Community Engagement and Service Learning (CESL)

Mark Your Calendars!

Service Learning Day will be Thursday, March 25, 2021!

On Service Learning Day, academic classes scheduled between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm are replaced with service-learning experiences. Faculty and staff engage students in service-learning within the students’ field of study in any of the following ways:

  • developing their own opportunities for their classes,
  • guiding students to join opportunities hosted by departments and colleges, and/or
  • accepting other service-learning experiences connected to academic learning outcomes.

To adhere to COVID-19 safety guidelines, experiences in Spring 2021 should be virtual, contactless, or meet the same social distancing requirements of face-to-face instruction. See Tarleton's Roadmap for Spring 2021 for current requirements.

Refer to the Service Learning Day website for more information.

Instructional Development & Course Design

The Instructional Design team at CEE is excited to announce our brand-new training lineup for Spring 2021.  These training sessions are divided into five targeted tracks to help you utilize research-based instructional practices to deliver engaging instruction to your students.

  • Accessible Design

  • Course Design and Management

  • Enhancing the Community of Learning

  • Integrating Educational Technology

  • Teaching and Learning

Additionally, we have curated a collection of training sessions that will be delivered from January 12 – January 22 in what we call Back-to-School Bootcamp.  Along with the basics, there are sessions available on developing and structuring courses for student success, setting up your grading strategy and gradebook, using Zoom in the Hyflex 2.0 environment, and much more.

Below is a list of our Back-to-School Bootcamp offerings and don’t forget to keep an eye on the training schedule all semester. You can view it by clicking here

The CEE is piloting a new Faculty Learning Community (FLC) initiative this spring. FLCs will be small groups of interdisciplinary faculty who have a common professional interest. The inaugural FLC, led by Dr. Nathalie Jones, will focus on Diversity, Teaching, and Inclusion. Faculty interested in participating should submit an application by January 25

CEE Mobile STEM Lab

The Mobile STEM Lab Trailer will represent Tarleton in the community and spark interest in science with young minds and prospective students. The trailer will be a tool to provide hands-on learning experiences for the youth in our community. The CEE is working in conjunction with Dr. Curtis Langley and Ag Mechanics to complete the interior build-out of the trailer. We are currently seeking a local vendor to complete flooring once the Ag Mechanics shop gives the go-ahead. The Center is actively searching for a driver with a Class A CDL as the trailer will need to travel to Austin for the technology installation upon completion of the interior. Stay tuned for status updates.
